Synpower w/ Maxlife Tech in '03 Audi Allroad

Could I run 5w30 Synpower w/ Maxlife Technology (full synthetic) in an '03 Audi Allroad 2.7t?

I believe it calls for VW 502 and when I wrote Valvoline they said that they only recommend Synpower MST. I was curious if it was possible that the Maxlife met that spec without being labeled as such.

Not sure that MST would be a good idea in a USA high sulfur gasoline application. Regular Synpower 5W30 is on the 502 approved list, but I''l admit I'm not familiar with VW oils enough to make the call on whether ML Synpower would hurt anything. Based on the older Audis I've been around, engine oil is the least of their issues.

It's on the thicker side of 5W-30, but it still an A5/B5, GF-5, Dexos1 oil.

It may work fine, but an A3/B4 oil w/ 502 is what Audi recommends and this doesn't meet it.

Thanks. Would the 10w30 with a Noack of 6.3 be better? It's neither A5/B5 or A3/B4 though. This in an 03 Audi Allroad w/ 130k miles.

Trying to help a neighbor with oil I already have. I also have Rotella T6 on hand.

You can actually change the title of your reply within a thread as well; see the title of this post as "Reply vs Quote." Instead of "Re: Synpower w/ Maxlife Tech in '03 Audi Allroad."

If I was trying to help someone, I'd be sure to use the correct oil, 502.00 approved in this case.

Should anything ever go wrong with that car (and it's an old Allroad, so chances of that are pretty high

), the neighbor will be blaming you for using an unapproved lubricant, even if that lubricant had nothing to do with the failure.

Now, if it was my own car, I'd be more lenient with oil selection, but I would still choose something that at least meets ACEA A3/B4 for this application.

Good points. They've been using quick lube shops when/if they had their oil changed so good chance that I'd get blamed even if I used a "better" quality oil.
 
Off the reservation oils that are readily available and will work would include M1 HM 10W-30, any 10W-40, and HDEO whether 10W-30, 15W-40 or 5W-40.
All of these oils would have high enough HTHS to be suited to this engine.
You can cross the M1 HM and the 5W-40 HDEOs off the list since proper complying 0W-40s are available in M1, Edge and Synpower for the same money.
In most of Cali, a 15W-40 HDEO would be a good bet.
These oils have more HTHS than this application requires and there aren't too many areas of CA where a 15W would be any problem for morning starts.
These are nice cars and I've always loved the model name. As others have noted, oil choice is way down the list of serious concerns in owning and using an old Audi.
 
Is this Audi turbocharged or not? VW/Audi 502 calls for a higher HT/HS than what is typical for 5w30 engine oils. I suggest getting a Euro specification oil, then adding "Liqui-Moly oil saver" to your oil.

I then recommend getting some kind of VW/Audi 502 approved oil, I use Castrol 0w40, and M1 0w40 is another common VW/Audi 502 oil. Shell RT6 5w40 is not approved for VW/Audi 502, but it has extremely good performance when used in VW and Audi engines, so you might want to use it.

Anyway, I wish you good luck in slowing down those oil leaks. I have heard that some Audi V6 engines have several things that can cause oil leaks.

Rotella T6 should do the trick. Pretty similar to Castrol 5w40 IIRC...
