I currently drive a 98 Grand Prix. It has 107,000 on it right now, and I'd like to try Royal Purple ATF. However, I've read that synthetic in a high mileage transmission can have some adverse effects on the clutch material, and may cause it to slip. I have changed the fluid in it before, right after I got it at about 92,000. I don't think it had been done before that, as the fluid was obviously burned. I have no issues with the transmission at all, but then again, the 4T-65E transaxle isn't known for longevity, either.

What are your opinions?

I would not do it. You say the fluid looked burnt at 92,000. Thats not a good thing and as a result the trans may have suffered for it. Just leave it alone and keep your fingers crossed.

Why put in an expensive ATF?

I just dropped the pan again. And, no, I haven't moved to synthetic.

I switched a 92 mits mirage at 103k miles to redline D4 synthetic last year. no problems so far. I did have that burnt transmission fluid when I bought the car used, but changed it twice in two years before going to synthetic.

Hey there,

I have been looking at this switching to
synthetic stuff for a while now. I have been
looking at Pennzoil for a while. This brand
works wonders as my oil so I figure why not
in the tranny. The only thing is, when I look
at the specs on the Pennzoil website it looks
like the MERCON/DEXRON III out-performs the
synthetics or am I reading it wrong ?

Here are the links to the two diff. fluids:

Hey there,

I have decided to try the MULTI-VEHICLE formula
from Pennzoil. It's MERCON, MERCON V,
DEXRON...etc. It's a sythetic blend.
The cool thing is it only takes
6.2 pints or 3.1 quarts to fill this thing up.
I like their dino oil so I figured I would give
it a chance. I really didn't want to go full
synthetic yet. I may do that later. If
everything is ok I may go 30,000-50,000 on this
change. That would put me at about 162,500.

I will post back with results.

I switched a 92 Corolla with 171k on it to Amsoil ATF. This car was somewhat neglected before I got it, but the old fluid didn't look too bad. It now has 176k on it and I haven't noticed any problems. It sure shifts nice first thing on a cold morning.
