So I think it's ridiculous that that my bank doesn't allow you to put checks in the atm. What banks allow you to put checks in the atm plus don't require you to have a monthly minimum checking account balance? I bank at credit union and they don't have any fees at all which is nice but the fact that I can't deposit checks in the atm is retarded.

Alot of smaller credit unions aren't able to catch up and buy those fancy systems as quick. That's relatively newer service for most. My CU has a brand new one that even reads the amounts and puts a picture on my receipt. It's pretty slick.

err... what? you can't deposit checks at the ATM? So the ATM is just for getting money out? I don't think I've ever seen an ATM that didn't have those little envelopes that you write your account number and check into on, then slide into the ATM... and I've banked with quite a number of banks. (This excludes the little ATMs at convenience stores and stuff.)

They said they used to take checks in the atm but then they quit. I found out about this after wasting a bunch of time getting a debit card that was defective from the beginning.

If they do a night deposit, you get credit the next day, so no ATM deposits would not be a deal-breaker to me, if they provide the other services you need.

Most of the big banks would take checks at ATM (a lot of them like BofA would even scan it and try to fill in the number for you, with no envelope too).

Chase also has a mobile phone app that would "scan" it by taking a picture of it. If I remember right they have a minimum balance requirement, and Wells Fargo even has a direct deposit or monthly activity / transfer requirement between accounts.

The bigger banks are getting greedy. So your bank does not allow you to put checks even in their ATMs? What are you to do with a check? Stop at the bank? Mail it in?

I would not feel safe depositing a check at an ATM.

Why not just go during normal business hours and deposit it ?

My recomendation is to stay away from BOFA unless you want to get hosed with fee's. But there ATM's do "see" the check or cash you put in them. The small bank I left BOFA for makes me put the checks or cash in an envelope but atleast I can do that and not wait 1/2 hr in line.

What? A deposit is a deposit. Are you saying that in order to make a deposit at the ATM it has to be all cash?

My Credit Union (I'll never bank at a "real" bank) has the app that you take photo of the check, wait 20 days then destroy the check.

Funds in my account within 5 minutes. I have not been to a branch for years.

Who uses a "bank" anymore?!?

Not only did I switch to a credit union back in 2008-2009 for my checking and what little savings I do have, but I consistently get significantly lower loan rates with my CU than when I call a bank. I just refinanced my boat for 4.99% at a CU, the lowest bank I could find to finance it was charging 13.24%. Eff that.

I love the CU and will never ever go back to a 'bank'. ESPECIALLY the big names "BOFA, PNC, et. al. They dont care about your financial future at all, just theirs.

Not to split hairs, but the bank is giving you a "short term loan" until that check actually clears. It's not like the ATMs that can take checks, or even an app for depositing, makes funds available any quicker.

That is okay.

Better service at low/no cost.

Good to go!

I have to walk in the bank and wait in line and give them the check to either cash or deposit it. Depending on how busy they are and whether or not the teller actually knows what he or she is doing this can be a 25 minute wait sometimes.

Ditch them ASAP. As long as you don't have a bunch of accounts there, it's easy to find another bank. I'd recommend a credit union as even when they are jerks it still gets resolved fairly quickly.

And, not taking checks at the ATM is one of the sillier things I've heard. My local CU takes checks and bills at the ATM. The envelope doesn't know what's inside, and it's money in their accounts.

There's more fraud with ATM deposits than you can fathom, the empty envelope is the classic. ATM's that take envelope deposits also need settled each day. A cash dispensing only ATM only needs settled when is needs bills. To upgrade to ATM's that take check deposits without envelopes are majory $$$.

The trend is the ability to deposit with your smartphone/iPad.

Most ATMs know when you deposit empty envelopes.

Its noted in the log and most these days will tell you when you "forget" to put the items in.

Agree with the apps. Got mine when they came out on Play.

I don't understand why people have such gripes about banks. Do they leave a minimum balance in and expect the world of the bank. Its a service. You want it for free put a little bit of money in.

Happy TD Bank (bought my old local state bank) customer since 1994.
