Switching oil. Have a question or two on weights.

Honda Oil Application Guide

So as you said Honda seems to prefer that you use 5w-20.

They acknowledge that there is 0w-20 but refer to it as only 'acceptable'

But YOU (and others here) think that 0w-20 would be better because:

1) Thin is good, so thinner must be better?

2) Indiana is the coldest place in North America, so an exception should me made ?

3) Honda wanted to save money on testing this engine, so they just spec what Toyota did?

4) 0w-20 costs a bit more, Honda wants to save me some money?

There have been some good threads here recently on Thin v Thick'er' Oil
there ARE pros and cons. You decide.

But for you, where you live in reality, Rust is going to have a much greater effect on the life of your car than any oil ever will.

I think when Honda says it's acceptable they are saying, in fact, that "yes it makes sense too and we should have placed that in our manuals in the first place".
That's what I think.
As for Thin vs. Thick.... I've only seen 10w-30 vs. 10w- 40 sorts of threads. If you have a link to a related thread I will be happy to read it, no doubt.
And lastly, thanks for not being condescending in your tone.

Why do you want to change from EP to AFE? Compare the viscosity of both oils in 0w20; there is virtually no difference. What do you expect to gain?

I feel as though I am not using the EP properly. I am only going 5,000- 6,500 max on my change intervals and I feel like I may have to climb down from there because of short tripping.

There is only a 2 dollar difference and the EP has Pao content that I like.... so maybe stay with the EP even if I'm not getting full advantage?
What are your change intervals on your 2010 Civic? Do you do any regular short tripping in there?

We've been doing a 5000 mile OCI on both Civics. There is not a lot of short tripping on either, outside of the weekend runs to the grocery store. Most days they run at least 15 miles in each direction. We will be sending a sample of 0w20 Mobil1 EP from the 2010 to Blackstone in about three weeks to determine if that shouldn't be extended, and will post results.

Looking at the specifications of Mobil1 EP vs. AFE in the 0w20 class, it is difficult to see what you might gain by switching. Saving only $2 on an oil change seems rather trivial. As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I am running 0W20 EP in a 2006 Ford Focus. Last OCI was 10k and analysis was good and showed it could do more. I just went over 10k on this OCI and might change it this weekend if I get time or run it another couple thousand. The oil looks like new yet. Very good oil for the money.

I think 0W-20 has only been readily available everywhere for maybe the last 3 or 4 years. That's probably why Honda went with the 5W-20 recommendation back then. 0W-20 also implies "synthetic only" which may rub some people the wrong way as being a bit esoteric for an economy car, much the same as when premium fuel is recommended in some cases. (i.e. - It's an economy car, why do I have to put expensive oil in it? Maybe I'll just buy something simpler. Honda did not want to lose any customers. Now with the government grip on their neck to maximize economy, they have no choice.) It's likely a 10k OCI is doable with any 0w-20 full synthetic as long as you keep it topped off.

Fx4 is doing 20000+ mile intervals with afe, backed by used oil analysis and even at that mileage there's still life left in the oil. It's a 5.4l ford.
So 10000 mile intervals are child's play.
Heck the conventionals available today can do 10000 mile intervals.
