Running 5w-40 oil in B58

I know this question might've been asked here before. But, would running 5W-40 oil in the B58 be harmful? On the hood, it states to run 0W-20. I don't feel comfortable running that thin oil even if I don't track the car.

I've been reading that 5W-40 weight oil offers better protection. That's why I'd rather run 5W-40 than 0W-20.

Would 5W-40 weight oil thicken up too much during the winter? I used 5W-40 in my E90. But the E90 required 5W-30. So, going from 5W-30 to 5W-40 wasn't a huge jump.

But, going from 0W-20 to 5W-40 is imo.

Why?

What year and model BMW is this in?

I usually go with the Australian specification. For example our 04 CRV is specified 15w-40 in Australia.

Checked the Penrite Australia site to see what your B58 uses there. A 40 grade should be fine.

What vehicle is this in? Not familiar with the designation. (Edit: ah, looked it up...BMW)

0W-30 per Penrite Australia

No oil of a higher HT/HS is going to harm the engine. A higher film thickness protects the engine, not the other way around.

This is the science and engineering.

Yet BMW had so many issues with the recommended 60 grade oil, for many years, who ever would have thought :ROFLMAO:. According to some here those engines should have been indestructible!

No, E90 DID NOT require 5W30.
E90 that you had required LL01 oil which could be at that time 0W30, 5W30, 0W40 and 5W40.
B58 in Europe uses LL04 oils which could be 5W30 or 5W40.
So to answer your question, yes, it could be used, and if I had it, I would use probably something like Motul X-Clean+ 5W30 or Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30, means LL04 oils.

Yes people always get stuck on grade when the approval is already dictating a minimum HT/HS.

Thicker oil is not likely to cause any issues. If anything at all, it might reduce your fuel efficiency by like a few tenths of a mile per gallon. Not enough to even really notice. My Caravan specs 5w-30, but I run 15w-40 HDEO during the warmer months here in WI. Rotella T4. No issues so far. I wouldn't be afraid to run a 5w-40 or even a 15w-40 in that engine, given that the temps you are running in are warm enough for a 15w.

For Europe 5w30LL is recommended, it seems like a good compromise.

Again I agree with this. I'd surely use a 5W-30 LL-04 if I had a B58.
These oils are HTHS 3.5-3.7 cP which is very close to 0W/5W-40.
Actually that's what two of my cars are running. Nice engine btw.!

So, basically, run BMW LL-04 approved oil. Wheater it be 5w-30 or 5w-40. Both are fine as long as it's LL-04.

LL-04 is diesel weight oil tho no?
