Most of my vehicles are specd for 5w30 motor oil. Could I run 5w-40 with out any problems? Would like to try a Synthetic 5w-40 oil. Just want to be sure there will no issues to deal with down the road.
Is running a 5w-40 oil o.k.?

M1's 5W-40 Truck & SUV formula is recommended where 5w30 and 10w30 and 15w40 weights are specced. It says this in the "applications" section of the link.
I've thought of trying the esso Full Synthetic 0w40 in my 1.5 Echo but toyota frowns on 40 wt oil. To bad...under $22 for 4.4 Litres at Wallys
I'm using ow40 in my wifes cavalier and
daughters sunfire. No problem with the
heavier weight oil at operating temps.

What vehicles/engines are we talking about?
I'm currently running Rotella T Syn 5w40 in my '99 F150 with the 4.6l Modular V8 that shows nice numbers on 5w20 and 5w30. The first UOA over the summer showed relatively similar results to the 5w20 and 5w30 oils I had been using. Only penalty has been fuel mileage (last interval was down 7% from running 5w20 or 5w30). Starts and runs fine - the temp was -10F the other morning.
My Jeep that calls for 10w30 runs great on 5w40.

My vehicles in question are a 2003 Pontiac Aztec with a 3.4 Liter V-6, and a 1996 Dodge Neon with a 2.0 Liter Inline 4 banger.
With the 3.4L, I think you'll be like MNgopher and notice a slight fuel economy drop. When I tried a Syntec 10W-40 (Thin 40wt.) in my 3.8L, I noticed also that the engine seem a bit more sluggish. I'm sticking with the syn 30 wts. Since I got good uoa with Mobil 1 10w30, I think GC is about thick as required.
In Europe apart from a few noticeable exceptions like Ford (5w30 for Zetec engines), 5w-40 is usually specified.
We find that for example 10w30 is much harder to come by than 10w-40 which is a very common grade.
The fact is that for most vehicles there is very little difference and with our climate in the UK, 5w-40 and 10w-40 are probably the most common grades leaving aside the performance grades like 0w-30, 0w-40 etc.
My view is that in most cases they are interchangeable.
