Swap to Amsoil 10W-40 AMO

I now have 3K miles on my car and have finally swapped to full synthetic. I've used M1 for years, but wanted to give Amsoil a go. I went with a bit higher weight b/c I live in Tucson and spend time in the FL panhandle during the summer, so I expect high temps.

I really didn't know much about Amsoil and there are several lines to choose from, so I just went with the weight I wanted and found some at a local Carquest store. I went with the AMO "High Performance" synthetic 10W-40. Any thoughts or comments? They also had the "Turbo Formulated" stuff, but not in the weight I was looking for.

Before this, I broke in the engine a bit more aggressively to seat seals, etc (I know this subject has a lot of debating sides) and then I changed just the factory fill at around 250 miles. I continue to run 5w30 conventional until the 3K mark, whrere most of these miles were from the long trip from AZ to FL with combined short distances of

I have used Amsoil for quite a while in both Jeeps and both of my Nissans and really like it. used oil analysis are good and I run it up to about 10K OCI's.

Either the Amsoil 10w-40 or their new 5w-40 would be an excellent choice to use in the Sube STI engines....

If youre going to be driving it hard, you might want to up the thickness, Otherwise, I dont know that you need an up in thickness, i.e. 30 to 40wt. However, Id say to make sure that the oil you choose is ACEA A3 rated. that to me is more crucial than grade.

That amsoil series 2000 (I think?) 0w30 looks really good. Full syn, heavier 30wt, diesel spec additive pacage, good oil overall.

Im not all tha keen on upping out of spec viscosity for street vehicles, regardless of what they are, unless I know the typical oil temperatures. Only used oil analysis will tell for sure.

You might also consider GC for use in this application.

A great choice, IMHO. Should be just the ticket with your turbo, too! Cold starts (not that you'll see many) are never a problem with the AMO, all the various diesel certifications don't hurt, either.

I would think you could easily go 10K with a filter change & top-up @ 5K.

Bet you really like this oil!

The 10W-40 is arguably one of Amsoil's "lowest tech" old style full synthetic oils. I think it is a fine oil for your application - however stay within the manufacturers max recommended OCI.

If you want an XW-40 - the 5W-40 or the 15w40 full synthetics are better choices IMHO for very different reasons.

The 5W-40 is a newer formulation better for newer cars, although it's labeled and designed for Euro 5W-40 requirements.

The 15w40 is old tech - but it is lower cost, very stable and very heavy duty with a lower viscosity spread. The 15W will be fine in your environment.

Interestingly I also feel a XW-30 such as the Amsoil Series 3000 5w30 or the straight 30 would work fine and give you a bit better MPG.

No, the STi didn't come with synthetic from the factory. The Evo comes with M1, but thankfully (for break-in purposes) the STi comes with a 5w30 conventional.

Pablo, I didn't know there is a difference between the "old tech" and "new tech" oils they carry. So, I should go with the 3000 or 2000 series next time? I compared the two and the numbers looked very close. Are there additives in the newer stuff that make it better?

Slightly different base oils and additive packs.

S3000 5w30, 5W-40 would be my first choices.

I agree with this as well. German Castrol Syntec (GC) 0w30 what I'll be running in my STi in another 2,000 miles.

Me too. I like the Amsoil 5w-40 alot. If I had to use a 40wt that would be the one.
