I just used my last bottle of 5w30 Quaker State Advanced Durability in my Girlfriends Grand prix 3.1 for a 5k mile oil change to finish cleaning out some of the mess her dad left in it with 10k mile changes from whatever quick lube shop he took it to. It has not leaked one single bit of oil the entire time she has had it and we would like to move to an oil we feel more comfortable running for 7500 or so mile with a fram ultra for two oil changes. My current two competitors are Supertech synthetic at 17.47 and Quaker State Synthetic Blend for 16.97. Which do you guys think would be the better choice? Her driving is probably 75% highway 25% city and she will do around 10k miles per year.

Switching to a synthetic oil in an old engine may start some leaks. I know because I have seen it. I would stay with conventional oil and a mid priced filter and 6,000 mile change intervals. Keep it simple silly.
If you could get Pennzoil conventional for a good price that would be my choice for the 3.1

Some synthetics have a lower surface tension and exhibit "drain off" leaving a thinner film and less cushion on restart. There is an oil film, it's just thinner. Most conventional oils and blends will do somewhat better (better capillary fill). I do not know if ST is such an oil. Never used it...

Id opt for the supertech syn.
I like the Quaker State. I think too many people go crazy over Synthetics. The oil makers know it to. We went from two original synthetics to every oil maker and even generic synthetic. I like shorter oil changes. I do use synthetic oil, but only when I get it for the same price as conventional. Which is ALOT.

However, my real recommendation is Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend. It's a stout oil & can likely handle 7,500 mile OCIs. If not, there's always MaxLife full synthetic readily available in 5w30 & 10w30.

Part of my fleet which has about the same highway/city breakdown is on the 7,500 OCI and uses whatever the contracted bulk is at the time. The Mopar 3.3 and GM 3.6 have had no issues (fleet is between 60K and 160k).

I put Mobil Super HM in my aunt's '04 Toyota Solara & it has been running smoothly in the 2.4L 4cyl engine. I think it's a pretty good oil. I am not sure what percentage of it is synthetic though, so I'm unsure whether it could handle 7.5K miles. We are doing 5,000-6,000 in the Solara.

Yes, it would likely be good for a 7,500 interval. Many conventionals are good for 7,500.

I picked up some QS Defy 10w30 for my protege recently when it was on sale for $2 a quart at Autozone and I thought it had an SN rating on it. I will have to check that. However, No, it is a 2002 model care so I would be surprised if SL wasn't an acceptable oil for the Grand Prix.
I think I will try the QS Defy and Mobil high mileage and see how the car likes it. (whichever is cheaper at the time of purchase)

mazdamonky I have moved some old engines that ran dino their entire life to supertech full synthetic (per WM label) just fine without it starting leaks etc. If it gets dirty fast you can change the filter only or do an early oil change. Others may have the same or different results as you may have different results.
