The only time I ever had lifter clacking(caused by an oil filter) was with a Super Tech filter about 9 years ago on a 4.2 Ford truck engine. This started about 2K into an OC. I pulled the Super Tech off after 5-9 days of cold engine clacking, and installed a MC. Problem solved, so I have used MC filters ever since.
I stopped by a wal mart here in nj today but they still had the old White filters they can't seem to get rid of on the bottom shelf collecting dust on clearance, I was going to buy a couple of the new super techs to cut open just to see what they look like but you beat me to it. They seem to look good for $2.84
Much better than the ones that tear all the time. If i see them at wal mart i will pick up a couple and ask car 51 to post the pictures for me. In the past Wix always made good oil filters.. I was hoping to see the oil holes in the center tube i hope they stay large and not change to the small slits. If they keep making filters like the one in the picture and keep the price low they will be great sellers..

I hope they make an ST8316. The interesting filter will be ST7317, a cross to Wix's 51356 (because Wix also makes a 57356 with a slightly different base plate).
Also, the only ST I saw on the shelf was the ST5, but it had a proudly made in USA flag on it. But many of Wix's filters are Mexican, like the 51334 and 51356 sizes. Fram and Purolator make all their spin-on cans in the US.

I was going to pick one up to cut and post, but my Walmart doesn't have them yet either.

The pics mrsilv posted looked good to me. These do not. The pleats look too flat. Makes me think they are like wafers/crackers instead of like sandwich bread. I consider the same criteria on air filters too. It just seems it will work better when the end of the pleats are rounded instead of flattened.

If the ST 7317 is going to spec'd for use in Honda vehicles and others (as I expect), it will have/use the newer 57356 base plate design. IMO, Wix wouldn't use the now superseded 51356 baseplate design, because the change to the newer 57356 was made to improve the attachment to the engine block. And as I believe the new ST to be basically the O'R MicroGard filter line link shows what the ST7317 will look like.

Yep, 'some' Wix spin on filters are made in Mexico. But having personally used the Napa Gold 1334 a couple times and posted pics, I experienced no drop off in quality compared to the US made Napa Gold 7356 and 1348 I've used.
However, if a coo of Mexico bothers one, just have to use an alternative brand, there's many. But for example, for those driving/owning a Ford vehicle made in Hermosillo, or a Kia/Hyundai made in S Korea, et al., I wouldn't think that would be an issue.

Definitely a Wix jobber type filter as mentioned. I have found them to work well and have good construction.
Only downside if you can call it that, is efficiency. Straight paper cellulose and likely around 70-80 percent at 20 microns. Don't know if it really matters much, but another 75 cents will jump you to 95% which may be a better buy for those who care about such things.
I certainly don't lose any sleep using one of these though.

I guess for under $3 you can't have it all. Although I'd rather have 90%+ efficiency, I plan on using one once they show up at my local Walmart.

Im glad wal mart went with Wix i just hope that Wix stays a good quality filter and mann does Not decide to put those super small oil holes in the center tube and cut corners. Wix always used to be a great filter but they were bought by another company so lets see what happens.

Im curious to see it the super tech filters will be all made by Wix or like their oil that can change from state to state.
