I see where you're coming from. But as long as it's SM rated, it will do just fine in the junker 
I only run it for ~2,600 miles anyawy (lower intake gasket leak).
In the Malibu I pony-up for name-brand since it's in there for 7,500. Running the cheap-o makes me a little nervous there.

Oh, I get it now, you were calling your car a hooptie, not the name brand oil.
I see your point now, don't disagree with that thinking.
EDIT: fwiw, they call them hoopties around here too. Seen some refer to them as beaters on here too.
