For whatever it's worth, the Walmart House Brand Full Synthetic is now GM4718m compliant. (Meets Corvette Specs). This is more than can be said for Castrol Syntec, Mobil Super Syn. Just had the oil changed on my Vette for $37.70 at Walmart including an AC/Delco filter and 6 qts of SuperTech.

Are you saying syntec isnt adequate to meet the old corvette spec.

4718M is obsolete and was replaced by DEXOS 1.

Yes, and as I understand it, no Super Tech oil meets DEXOS 1. You would think that one would, since they sell licensed Dex VI ATF.

And before anyone says it, DEXOS is an enhanced spec over API SN and GM-LL-A-025, its not just a license.

I think its a great thing. Anyone with a GM can just look for the Dexos label on the front of the bottle and they will be properly covered with a high quality oil that meets warranty.

It's probably a Chevette.

4718M is not obsolete if you have an older car and that's what was specified at the time. SuperTech Synthetic would likely pass Dexos when they decide to pay the fee.

It is obsolete in the sense that GM doesn't offer it anymore. They haven't certified any oils against 4718M since DEXOS came on the scene.

In order to get a current lubricant certified to the same level as 4718M offered you would need to buy one that meets DEXOS 1.

Thanks for all the input and comments.
1) 4718m was the spec for my 2007 Vette. It was brutally hard to meet with a relatively small number of oils meeting it. Syntec was one that did NOT meet it. It only met GM6409.
2) Dexos can include synthetic blends. PZ comes to mind.
3) My local Walmart T&LE does a great job.The shop mgr takes alot of pride in the work done there and it shows.
4) SN, GF5, 4718m, 5w30, full syn. What more do you need to know?

The only thing that would concern me these days is that someone might be unscrupulous enough to include that spec on the bottle or sheet, knowing full well it's an obsolete spec. On a boutique, I would expect they'd keep the formulation quality intact. On others, you never know. It's not like Mobil "watered down" their formulation to switch from the Vette spec to dexos1.

On the other hand, in fairness to SuperTech synthetic, they are chasing a price point more than just about anyone else. Having very little in the way of marketing and reducing licensing costs makes sense for them.

Oil is constantly evolving. And Castrol produced oils that met many specs that are far harder to meet than 4718M, like many of the Euro specs (GC 0w30 comes to mind here).

I'm doubting the reason they didn't make a 4718M oil was because they couldn't

And with the quality of modern additives and base stocks, it is possible to meet the performance requirements of specifications that used to require a synthetic. Yet you don't see LL-01, MBxx, VW xx, Porsche A40 oils that are synthetic blends, which ties back into my first point

Sounds like you are happy with who services your car, no reason to change that

I just looked for a picture of the back of this oil bottle and found one on the PQIA website:

It does not say it is certified for 4718M, which as myself and Garak noted, isn't possible because GM doesn't certify oils against that spec anymore.

What it says is this:

Quote:
Suitable for use where GM 4718M was previously recommended

That is NOT a formal approval. That is a RECOMMENDATION. They are saying that in their opinion, they feel this product is SUITABLE for use in applications that called for 4718M. You'll note they even use past tense because the spec is no longer current.
