Mikep:

On the Crown Vics I can do it on the ground with my hand + a filter wrench w/o any problem... even with the reduced ground clearance of the crown Vic (in stock form they're not as high off the ground as you'd expect).

Its on the driver side of the engine block.

On the 5.4 in the E-250, its basically under the van - very easy to reach but very messy to replace as the oil just starts draining as you loosen the filter.

On the F150's, unless equipped with a factory remote filter mount (some from 97 to 99 did - but not a huge number), the FL-820s is mounted horizontally in a terrible spot. Its located just a little ahead of the centerline of the front suspension on the drivers side. On my '97 2wd F150, it isn't too bad. Crank the wheels full right to swing the pitman arm out of the way and rech in there and get it. It drools oil all over the front crossmember though, so it drips for a day or so. On the '99 4wd, don't even get me started... No room for a filter wrench of any kind that I have found. Its pinned right next to the front differential and drools on that when you take it off.

Its bad enough I am planning on putting on a remote filter mount sometime this spring so I don't have to curse at it and the engineers anymore (and I am an engineer!).

As an FYI, I have a used purolator pure one and a Valvoline (Champion) filter in the garage right now - the Champ is nearly empty, the Pure One weighs a ton!

My mother-in-laws 95 Mark VIII with the 4.6L DOHC engine is fun to change the oil filter on. You have to turn it in such a way to clear the sway bar that if you don't get it turned right the first time you get an arm full of oil out of the filter.

Been using an Amsoil oil filter and it definatly had oil in it. Been having good service with it since she bought it but then the car only has 30k on it.
