I did replace the cap in 2004 because i messed up the plastic nut.

I will continue to use fram, although i hate fram.

Same here- used Frams on my daughter's Cobalt from the first oil change till she sold it 4 yrs later. Never a single problem.

You and me both. Had one in a car, buying it was my biggest mistake. Cam seals were a joke, 4 sets in 50,000 miles is ridiculous, just one of my many complaints on the ecotec.

What are you TALKING about???

Te Ecotec, at least at intro, was/is one of the better-designed, more reliable 4-cylinder engines ever built by a manufacturer.

It is one thing GM definetly got right!

Even for an opinion, your comment is rediculous!!!

Well.. The one we owned was a stink bomb. Firing modules Fail Fail Fail Fail. great 150+ dollars each time. Tick Tick Tick at the 100K mile mark. It was always a little noisy.. If the MAF sensor had the slightest ammount of dirt on it the car wouldn't go over 35MPH. The one I inherited when I married my wife BROKE DOWN the day she pulled it off the lot new. It needed a software upgrade.... That car had more problems than Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson combined.

Comparing it to the Ford 2.0 Zetec of the same era, the Zetec has been much much less troublesome. Parts (rarely needed) were much cheaper.. I got the Ecotec to get to 140K miles and the rest of the car [censored] out. The Ecotec had been ticking for the last 25K miles... The Zetec is at 130K miles now and runs like a champ. The guys at FocusFanatics love to post their compression on their Zetecs after 150-200K miles.. They show impressive numbers consitently.

Both of the motors while in my care were fed Amalie oil, and Hastings Filters... I never missed a service interval.

Over an 8 year span.......

Total number of tows due to engine issues... Ecotec, 3 Zetec, 0.

Moneys put into the motor in terms of repair parts (does not consider fluids or spark plugs)... Ecotec $1600 Zetec $75

Burned out Cat Converters... Ecotec 2 Zetec 0.

Check Engine lights that needed addressed Ecotec 7, Zetec 1.

Cost of an oil change for Ecotec (in my driveway) $26 Zetec $20.

I'm sorry man, but I can't say I liked much of anything about the Ecotec.. I liked that it was shiny...

Zetec is now a retired motor in favor of Duratec.. we'll see how it plays out. the 3.0 Duratec V6 has been a winner. 2 cars, 50K and 75K miles respectively and we havn't had to do squat to them that wasn't maintenence.

Hmmm....well, I'm not back-tracking or making excuses, but you got one of the very, very few Ecotecs that was a lemon. Seriously, for 90% of owners, these engines are a gem.

I've got a Duratec 3.0 as well, and I'll agree with you, it's a great engine. Hoping for long service out of this one!

Every engine good or bad has it share of "Monday's" So that's at least 2 of us with stinkers. I was reading an echotec board, and they had a post your mileage forum... some folks were reporting Dead at 80K... only one 200K miler in the bunch. I learned lots from that forum. Such as Thou shalt not install Bosch sparkpugs. I was glad to see that Pontiac leave my driveway.. it repeatedly angered me everytime the Mrs. got home from work, and I had to go get the code reader to see what it was THIS TIME. We may have just got one with a case of the Mondays.

There's oodles of 150-200K Ford Zetec guys on the focus forums.. My stupid little focus (endearing term) was supposed to be driven into the ground and trashed... but it's been like the stupid battery bunny. Just keeps going, and going. It runs so well, that I'm ready to put top shelf tires on it anticipating another 60K miles of motoring. I can't believe that little bugger is still on its first timing belt.

I'm a convert to Ford.. and although one can argue their vehicles as utilitarian and pedestrian... they really do hold up over the years. Seems like the late 90's they started getting their head together and decided that if the cars lasted a long long time, they didn't need to be super exciting. I'm thinking it's catching on.

My first Ford was a 98... It's not mine anymore, but still on the road running healthy.. The body sick with rust, but the motor still is ready to roll. I have 4 Fords bought on my watch now. 2 have the 3.0 Duratec One bought new 5 years ago, one used 72K miles. Both are very healthy. I'm glad to say that Engine supports our locals. Made in Brookpark OH.

I wish all our domestic car companies well. But I have to give FMC a pat on the back for going it without help from the feds. I think in a subtle way, that earned a merit badge with the american car community.

Darn, lots of 3800's with 150-200k miles on them. Regardless of oil/filter, as long as it's changed somewhat regularly.

But the OP's oil filter is an epic fail. Holes in the media means find a different brand. Maybe something costing more than $4...

Indeed... I got on a rant there. Regardless of what I think of that motor... That style filter is easily examined before you put it in the motor. The other one pictured with the re-enforced lip looks like a winner. I always found inconsistancy on that filter across the board. One OCI, the Purolator filter was USA... next it was chinese... some were Bugarian.. some Korean. Purolator, and Federated kept flip flopping on suppliers. Never had one fail on me... but I always wondered why they wouldn't just use "The Can" like all the other cars did. And why is that filter 7-9$??? A big Ford V8 can filter is only 3-5, and there's lots more media and parts to it.

I did like that the Fed/Hastings came with a new o-ring to put on the cap...

It's not uncommon for them do die unexpectedly! Wasn't a very good "reliable"/"dependable" engine.
