SuperTech EPIC FAIL

I think I know what happened to that filter. About five or six years ago GM/Saturn put out a TSB on their GM brand filters for the 2.2L Ecotec engines notifing dealerships/customers that the older 2.2L cartridge filters were not to be used in the newer 2.2L engines. This TSB was released in 2003 or 2004. The older filters had a "Z" like pattern in the outside folds while the newer ones did not. Anyway, the issue was that the old style filter was some fraction of an inch taller (maybe 1/8" taller) than the new filters and would crush/deform or fail if used in the newer 2.2L engines. As the years went by GM's older filters went away, and they only sold the newer style ones, without the "Z" pattern.

Just a few years ago, Pepboy had a series of great sales on Purolator Plus P15436 filters, with a mail in coupon that made the cost $1.98 each. Needless to say, I jumped all over that sale! I had other filters to use up before I got to the Purolator filters a couple of years later. When I did start to use them I discovered later, on the next oil change on the three 2.2L engines that I service, and used the Purolator filters on that they were crushed down and one had a hole in it just like the one in your picture. I had a new WIX filter so I sat it beside one of the unused Purolator filters, and guess what? The sale filters that I bought were made to the old spec and were about 1/8" taller than the WIX and a new German Hengst filter made for GM-Saturn!

I would suggest to you that the SuperTech filter you used was "only" defective to the extent that it was made out of spec! I would even bet that if you carefully measured your used SuperTech with a new filter of a different brand, that the a new filter and the used SuperTech filter are NOW the same height because of the crush down the the used filter experienced! Your pictures look just like what I experienced, except that even though I knew about the TSB, it never crossed my mind that Purolator might not have gotten the memo several years after it was issued!

I'm sticking with Delcos, thank you very much.

I have not been impressed with ANY other cartridge filter.

As far as I am concerned, the rest are junk.

I have yet to see a filter hold up in my aunt's Cobalt, besides the Delcos....

I only use the Hengst/AC Delco filters for the Ecotec. They can be had for $4.39 at Advance. Hengst makes the whole container that the cartridge fits into, why not stick to OE for under $5?

I use Champ Labs filters at work. The one on the left on the pic you posted are how they used to look. About a month or two ago we got a TSB stating the design was changing and now we are getting them all looking like your new one on the right.

I still have a "Z" type media filter at work. An old OEM Saturn filter.

i have a ecotec too and i dont like the cartridge filters...luckily for me though i buy bosch or ac delco which are made in USA...i have used supertech before and they seem pretty doushed even after 6k... i wont buy the bulgaria or korean filters anymore as i try to buy american products when possible anyway

That corresponds to what silverrat was saying too. I did compare the two filters, but didn't take into account the "twisting" of the pleats with the newer Korean model. If untwisted, it would most certainly be slightly taller, which obviously makes a huge difference!

I try to buy American as well. I clearly remember noticing the "Made in Korea" when I changed the oil last fall. It's very disappointing.

Chet - I have run the previous "older" ST9018's to 8-10K (per OLM) and the filters came out OK. The pleats remained pliable and even. They must have really cheapened out with the media, because it was "crispy" to the touch and separated from the endcap quite easily. I think I'm going to start using the AC Delco's. I might head to another Walmart today though, and go through the boxes to find the older style. If I find one, I'll try to get a picture comparing the old to new and show the height difference.

Thank you to everyone for your input.

I think you really need to pack that filter up and send it to Champ. Yeah, I have had a number of Purolators come out twisted for some reason, but the media was still in good shape. For the media to turn brittle, it was either seriously defective or subjected to excess heat, acids, or something.

I'd say you're obviously wrong. It only goes in one way. I think I know how to install an oil filter.

Please read the posts in this thread regarding the size difference with the newer filters. Thanks.

labman....I see your on the "knock" Purolator" kick again !

I love my PureOnes.............

By the way labman....what filters do use? I'm sure they are all American companies and American made....

Yeah, you screw down the cover until the O-Ring contacts the block and then snug it up a little. The anal use a torque wrench.

Theories need to account for all the facts. I don't see how all this discussion of crushing the filter could account for your report of the media turning brittle.

seriously dude, the picture tells the whole story. You crushed it. It happens with cartridge filters. You think there's no way to get it wrong but well, the photo's worth 1000 words. If you notice it taking more torque than usual to tighten the cap you better pull it back out next time instead of driving on it for 10k miles. Don't get uptight about it and try to blame evil Supertech and the entire country of Korea. Everyone's botched an oil change in one way or another at some point.

I don't think the filter looks crushed. Maybe it is, and I think you can install them wrong. But still ST shouldn't be supplying a longer filter than is required and the filter just plain looks cheap.

mechanicx, I was talking to the oP. You're right though, ST shouldn't be sending a filter that's out of spec, but it should be obvious to the installer that something's wrong. It's definitely crushed, I guarantee it's shorter now than when it went in.

If a factual report of the condition of a Purolator when removed is knocking them, so be it.

Is is asking too much to expect you to read the thread? As I said:

The first looked fine after 3 months and 6K. It has been a struggle to find reasonable priced ones and American made. The Purolators did come out twisted, but I blamed that on perhaps being slightly too high. Somebody here suggested you need to coat the ends with oil, but I kept forgetting.

Oh, not only do I want one made in America, but by an American company that keeps the good jobs here too.
