That's how I install them as well. With this method, you KNOW that the end is correctly snapped and seated into the cap. There is no room for error.

seriously dude, the picture tells the whole story. You crushed it. It happens with cartridge filters. You think there's no way to get it wrong but well, the photo's worth 1000 words. If you notice it taking more torque than usual to tighten the cap you better pull it back out next time instead of driving on it for 10k miles. Seriously dude, I click the filter on the cap FIRST. I then screw the cap on BY HAND and snug it with a socket. You indicate that crushing happens with these filters, yet I installed it wrong?
It's not from incorrect installation, it's because there is no uniformity in the filter construction and cheaper materials. This has only happened to me using Made in Korea filters. The Made in Korea media is more brittle and thinner than the USA filters. It is MOST CERTAINLY the manufacturers fault.
I just returned from Walmart and examined a 1/2 dozen ST, both Made in USA and Made in Korea models. NO TWO Made in Korea models were the same length! (holla - YOU reading this?). I also examined a couple of Frams, one of which was about 2-3mm TALLER than the USA Supertech's!
