New design to save cost? What about the efficiency?

I compared it with the Fram Guard and it’s the same thickness. It is no longer as thick as the Fram Ultra.

Those have been hit or miss in terms of construction and quality for a while, as early as April 2024. Here's a more recent thread:

The one you display was what it used to be.

I occasionally did/do OC's on an inlaws 2017 Camry 2.5L. After looking at the available filters at Walmart I used the (older) $2.97 ST9972 and felt the thicker wire backed media (shown in post 2 in this thread) looked better than any of the Fram's or even the Mobil 1. I would check the box for the ones with the tightest pleats (and smallest gap at the metal crimp). The last time I did an OC I was disappointed to see they changed the filter to the current style.
IMO, the older ST9972 was a steal at $2.97.

Did you get the new design or old design?

The old design clicks in for me.
I’m not sure I just picked them up off the shelf. When I saw they were a white wire-backed media I thought they were a cheap score.

Besides not snapping in the cap they were shorter then the Mahle or Hengst filters I typically use, like 1/8” or maybe a bit more.

Wire-backed is the old design as shown in post #2. New design does not have wire-backed.
