I got the 4R70W on a 01 F150 Supercrew 4x4 5.4l engine. I really would like to get a shift kit before doing anymore mods first. However, getting into the transmission is not my cup of tea. Never messed with them and I wouldn't be comfortable. 300 bucks would be money well spent in my book just don't know anyone around here that would do it that I'd trust.

It really is a bolt-in job. Basic tools and a little prep work going in. Since you already have a 4x4 you won't need a new filter if you go with an aftermarket pan. Just drill a hole in the old pan and make sure you have a good sized oil drain pan to catch the fluid. The factory gaskets are reuseable unlike the cheap cork that comes with most pans. You really aren't getting into the transmission very much. The valvebody will be right in front on your face when you get the pan off. Undoing the bolts is simple ratchet work...just have to be mindfull of the flid that will come out as the valvebody is loosened. If you don't have a heavy set of snap ring pliers then the a cheap pair of needle nose pliers and sharpen the points on them, thats what I did. I sold a valvebody to a girl for her Lightning and she didn't have much trouble installing it herself...

My B&M pan:

If your shift kit involves swapping out the valvebody and some accumulator springs I can tell you exactly what you'll need along with another suggestion. If you don't have an aftermarket drain pan, get one. That way you can simply drill a hole in the stock pan rather than trying to unbolt the stock pan drain it. I bought a B&M pan, holds 3 quarts more ATF than stock. You will also need a set of Heavy Duty snap ring pliers if this is a 4R70W transmission. Cheapo snap ring pliers won't do the job and you'll possibly loose the snap ring when it flies off the pliers. Also the valvebody holds about a quart of ATF in the worm trail and that will drain as you remove the bolts that hold it in the transmission. There a about 14 - 17 bolts total and they are not all the same. As your remove one, place it in the corresponding hole in the new valvebody. Go over the bolts about 3 times to make sure you have torqued them all when reinstalling the vb. This is not a very difficult job really. The 4R100's are much easier than a 4R70W as the valvebody is smaller and there are no spings to swap in the 4R100's. Shops around here charge around $300 for the work. Cost me $20 in ATF and tools to do it myself in about 2 hours taking my time.

Dude, since you put it THAT way. I know when I'd drop the vavle body, things are going to fall out besides fluid. Don't you have to drill some hole into the transmission too?

I paid to have mine installed. Just too messy...plus I wasn't too confident (keep in mind that I installed a supercharger myself, so I'm not a complete idiot).

I bought it from Art Carr/CA Performance Transmission, I think it was around $500 for the valvebody and install...I'm not 100% certain, but I think that's what I paid.

When you unbolt the valvebody you'll only get fluid...it's all a single assembly. the accumulaor springs are in separate recesses that you need a set of snap ring pliers to get to. Pop the covers off, swap springs, replace covers...easy. Your kit looks like it involves swapping out some parts inside the valvebody. would have been better off to pony up a little more money and buying a fully built/tested unit.

Has anyone tried the transgo kit? Found a place here in town, transmission shop, that has done these in the past.

I know a few guys with Monster Boxes and love them. They stand behind their products too. 1000 lb-ft capacity and if you break it within 2 years they'll cover it for you.

School me....if I get a shiftkit from Transgo, does that cover all the different aspects on the transmission? I mean, I've read about accumulators, valve bodies, etc. etc. I would assume a shiftkit is all of the above. If not, then what advantages would I have say getting a shiftkit or a valve body? I was quoted 60 bucks an hour to install a transgo shiftkit and it would take about 3.5 to 4 hours to install. Would a valve body be better, yes, more expensive, but it's a snap to install so that it would only take an hour and use that money towards the valve body. What would you do???

I would get the Factory Tech unit if I could do it all over again. I've read too many good reports, and know too many people who are satisfied with them, to consider anything else...though I do like having an Art Carr component in my transmission.

I'd fire off an e-mail to Greg Evans and let him explain it to you. He's always been up front about answering questions on the forums I've seen him post on.

Schmoe,
Factory Tech also sells a separator plate that gives similar benefits to their valve bodies, but at a very low cost. I believe they are also much easier to install.
