Great experience with Safelite

From what I've read they stopped making their own glass a few years ago. Was the glass still usa made? No defects or optical issues,? I've used them in the past with no problems.
The last two times I had to use Safelite, they installed Pilkington. Made in Mexico. On one car, it’s not as optically clear as OEM but hasn’t given me issues. On another car, it replaced a I -house Safelite windshield. Much better.

I think they use Fuyao (which is an OE manufacturer and is generally decent) now by default unless certain situations call for a certain manufacturer. Supply chain issues will also dictate what brands they use but that goes for pretty much any industry.

I think automotive glass is generally seen as a commodity. A new windshield is a new windshield, as long as it's new and fits right and is a certain level of acceptable quality. Most people don't care whose name is on it. Just like most people don't care who made the oil that Jiffy Lube puts in their Camry.

They did a splendid job putting a windshield in my Prius Prime. Just cost a bunch of money.

$200 for the glass, $300 for installation, $500 to calibrate the collision camera(s).

They got me in and out of there in a little under two hours, so they totally flat-rated it. Under my insurance deductible so I paid every penny.

Wow, $800 labor. $400/hour, I was in the wrong business...When I bought the wife a Subaru Crostrek there were many reports of windshield breaks, some while the car was just sitting. I think the stealership talked us into like $1700 glass insurance policy knowing this. We've had the car 4 years now without even a chip. Maybe we have just been lucky. I know my Tacoma is a rock magnet. I was driving to school (went back to college late in life) to take an exam, was on the highway and saw the rock coming. Just made a small chip. As I pulled into the parking lot at an angle I guess the frame tweaked enough for the glass to crack all the way across. But less than $200 to get it replaced (in 2006ish).

Back when I owned my newly purchased 2013 Subaru Crosstrek, I had the w/s crack twice, right near where the connector for the heated w/s grid is glued to the glass. I paid for the first one with insurance. The second one the glass shop covered, because it was just a week or two after the first replacement was put in. 3rd one lasted the rest of the time I owned the vehicle.

These days, with all these w/s's that require camera re-calibrations and all the associated expenses, it's going to do nothing but increase what we pay for car insurance. As it is, when you file a glass claim now, that claim counts against you and follows you for some time.

Pilkington is the OEM supplier for for some Toyota models. I think it's a good idea to stick with an OEM replacement; the "acoustic" rating is supposed to reduce wind and road noise.

The windshield in the Highlander was replaced by Dealership Auto Glass in Houston, six months before it ended up in Modesto, CA.

One gotcha - aftermarket Pilkington is made in Mexico(DOT 177), but in some cases they’ll get the OEM part and screen print out the OEM’s logo with theirs or grind it off.
