Just got home from driving down a major 6 lane and watched as a motorcyclist got rear ended by some dork in a car.

It was horrific watching the guy fly up in the air and spin off the car into the ditch.

The car never even braked until AFTER the collision. OMG, I am reminding myself why I do not own any bikes anymore.

About 30 years ago, I witnessed a teenager run up on a bike and rearend the rider at about 5-10mph at a light. It destroyed the back tire and knocked the guy a few feet into the air and he landed in the street. When the bike rider got up, he yanked the kid out of the car, punched him in the face and then sat in the car. At that point, he held the gas down until the car redlined and sat there like that for a minute or two until I heard a bang and saw a cloud of smoke...then the car's engine sputtered to a stop. At that point, I chuckled and drove off.

Yeah that is just terrible. I would not ride a bike. Even when I give enough space and respect to a motorcyclist on the freeway some bunghole has to cut in-front of me nearly clipping the motorcyclist to make his exit from the HOV lane from a 1/6 of a mile from the exit at 65-80MPH. This scenario is even worse when the bunghole is making his way over to the exit into the motorcycle.

Young guy who owned the ice cream store a mile from me got rear ended on his bike by a drunk. Flew across the intersection and landed on the pavement. Has rods in his back now and is all messed up, lost his store too. The drunk was supposedly some suburban kid from a wealthy family in a Chevy Suburban. A gas station a few miles away reported a couple drunks pulling a motorcycle from under the front of their truck then driving off. Suposed to have been getting the gas stations video to try for a license plate number. I don't know the outcome or if the culprit was ever caught.

I quit riding in the early 1980s figuring it was only a matter of time before something bad happens.

BTW it seems like people are driving worse than ever now and that seems to coincide with increased presence of touch screen controls in cars. I don't know how anyone can work a touch screen and drive a the same time.

This was a young yuppie type in an Altima. Sailed up an entrance ramp onto the highway going well over the 55 limit. I moved into the center lane and noticed the biker in the right lane just putting along.

Didn't really notice until the actual impact, debris flew up then the body, THEN the brakes! I was about ten lengths back and dialed 911 before the debris stopped spinning in the road. I was just waiting for mr. yuppie to try and bolt, but he didn't.

I swear I wanted to ram into his drivers door and hurt him some. A really stupid accident that was probably a texting incident.

That is horrible. The ice cream store guy was stopped at a red light when he got hit. Guy I work with was at a red light on his Harley when a lady bumped him enough to knock him down but not hurt him. She got out and asked if he was okay. He said he replied while still laying on the ground, "Lady, get out of her before I kill you."

I hope the motorcyclist is okay. The first thing the lawyers will ask for are cell phone records to suggest distracted driving.

GPS, cell phones, touch screen car controls, satellite radio, and no driving skills. hmmm. I wouldn't ride a bike either.

That is really sad...one second of another person's stupidity probably changed his life forever if he survived it.

I really have no interest in road bikes for this reason. Yes, you can get hurt off road too, but usually that's your own doing. Drivers have become exponentially more distracted behind the wheel thanks to the need for constant electronic entertainment. "OMG I TOTALLY CAN'T BE BORED IN THE CAR!!!!"

Some people that will go nameless get mad at me when I will not answer my cell phone while I am driving.

Lynch mob mentalities like the above are more dangerous than distracted drivers.

Bottom line, it was an accident. There are risks in life and if one choses to travel by motorcycle in heavy traffic they accept those risks.

The threat of lynch mobs can't help but keep the number of distracted drivers from being more than they are.

On my 18th birthday I was rear ended by a drunk in a Transit van...I was sitting on my bum on the road and my back against the bumper, and then he accelerated away. I climbed up and stood on the bumper, and the bike got scrapped of on the armco of the next corner. I stayed on the bumper for another 1/4 mile, with the driver swerving from side to side to try and throw me off...I finally jumped off as he ran a red light and turned a corner. I was wearing jeans, a denim jacket and light gloves, and no helmet. The drunk went home and held police at bay with a pistol until he was arrested some hours later...sober. He was later fined about 2 weeks pay at the time, and disqualified from driving for 3 months, but was able to drive during the day for his job. That was on a friday night - I went trail riding the next day, and was back at work on monday.

40 years later I'm still riding motorcycles, and have never been without a bike in that time. I spent over 25 years commuting on a motorcycle....these days I do it on a pushbike.

It's a passion...or it's not.
