What era of cars has the right amount of tech - helpful but not distracting?

I despise touch screens in cars, I prefer buttons and knobs. Anyways……

I really enjoy the “technology” in my 00 Buick. Has ABS and traction control, cabin air filter, air bags and a simple dual zone climate control. Only lack Bluetooth but was easily fixed by an fm transmitter. No thrills at all but everything it needs to be safe and the perfect commute car since it also has comfy seats and gets 30 mpg.

WWW has also made the argument that shortly after '08 he saw a decline in quality for awhile, presumably due to that thing that happened in '08.

I can't say I disagree. If nothing else, various cost saving measures were taken during this time by several manufacturers, resulting in things like non-essential drain plugs being eliminated, etc

IMO I think it was around 10 years ago give or take. I seem to gravitate to cars (I don't care for SUV's in general) around model year 2015 give or take a few years depending on the manufacturer. I know many pine for the simplicity of the 90's and 00's, but I think the 2010's were peak desirability overall.

I think it's good to have all the basics that truly old cars (30 or more years old) may have lacked: power windows, power seats, extensive air bags, HVAC, power steering, anti lock brakes.

Somewhat newer things I think are a must: cruise control, blue tooth connectivity, a decent stock stereo, back up camera, voice controls, good traction control, tire pressure monitor.

Newer things I could care less about or actively dislike: push button start, lane keep assist, touch screens, electronic emergency brake, CVT transmissions, turbos in commuter cars (why?), sun/moonroofs (problematic and who uses them?), stop/start ignition (terrible!).

Overall I think newer cars tend to have way too many gimmicks and screens that detract from the interior appearance and usability, and mostly detract from the driving experience instead of enhancing it.

My 2014 Accord has a good amount of tech. I could do without the touch screen, push button start, and the forward collision warning is overactive and intrusive. I'm glad I have a manual transmission because I don't like Honda transmissions. I wish it had rear cross traffic safety alert and better voice controls, but it's got all the basics and a few extras.
2000's:

Adaptive headlights
HUD
Decent NAV interface

I'm a kiss principal guy, I don't even want abs. My mazda has a display screen, i hate having to use it to operate the radio. I will probably keep the TPMS sensors in the truck as that is handy towing. I removed them when they died in the elantra at the last tire change. TPMS does not help if you have a rapid loss, a slow loss in a small car, i can notice that when driving, usually when they get to 20lbs.

I miss ignition points and vacuum powered windshield wipers. It’s also handy to have a hand crank in case the starter fails.

I would say mid-late 2000's for me. For a DD, I do appreciate lane change and parking sensors, have gotten to appreciate rear cameras but find much more beyond that to be somewhat distracting. Actually, I'd be happiest with knobs and an auto feature for climate and knobs for radio with an ample greenhouse for visibility. Luddite, who me?

90’s I think. I got frustrated driving the wifes car this week, the chiclet sized HVAC buttons I can’t figure out while moving. I think my next car “has to” have a good old fashioned knob for various settings.

Have to admit though, I kinda really want ABS for winter driving. I also prefer FWD after all this time, my last RWD was kinda easy to get sideways in the snow—great fun, but only when intentional. Curtain airbags due to all the other drivers on the road? seems wise. And I sure have grown to love the backup camera….

But I sure don’t want to pay for the tech, not upfront nor when its decades old and breaks. I had a car once that would need a windshield every two years—what would that run me today?

I tend to agree with the 1996 - 2008 range. OBDII introduced in 1996 and pre-widespread-Di in 2010. Although i've had no issue with Di.
