Best Buy has a 48” LG OLED on sale for $799. I’m thinking about buying it as my travel TV. My parents own a summer house on Lake Erie and don’t keep a TV in it because of possible thieves.

resolution, contrast, brightness, etc. continue to improve, but to really get a good viewing experience, it seems you need to spend the big bucks to get fluid motion at these high resolution display capabilities.

Yeah, TVs are cheap, the days of hunting for good prices are over, dime a dozen all over. Low priced TVs do have compromises but most of the public would not notice. They all display a good picture to the public. How long they last might be another story but most likely long enough that it will last long enough until you want a new one anyway.

Kind of like the OLD music CDs are superior to MP3s. CDs superior but no one cares because MP3s are good enough.

Then there are others like me who just want better than the standard stuff for that better all around performance and hopefully reliability as well as country of manufacture.

Its kind of why I dont see 8k TVs taking off until its forced down consumer throats. The public as it is now cant tell the difference between the picture on a generic $450 65 inch China made TV vs a $2,450 Japan or Korean made TV ... so what is 8k going to do other than bragging rights?
As it is right now consumers can not get uncompressed 4k material (and they dont even know it) unless they acquire a 4k DVD which is almost next to impossible, though I mange to at times. Heck they dont even know 4k DVD payers exist for that reason, I ahve to struggle and search to rent a BLuRay dvd from Redbox or Stream a 4k movie which is still a compromise from the DVD..

Just like OLED is the latest buzz word, a superior made LED will be better than a cheap OLED. Just marketing at this point.

Another point, Samsung's fantastic marketing move many years ago, changing the wording of their poor selling TVs to a buzzword made to sound like OLED, people still to this day think a Samsung QLED is something special, even though Sony developed this in 2013, Samsungs marketing word made it sound superior using that 2013 technology.

I care! I can't stand listening to streaming music, mp3's, or especially satellite radio (even just in a car for satellite) when really listening to music.
OMG, exactly. I had satellite radio before most people knew it existed 20 years ago and even lately when it came "free" with a new vechicle. But I never keep it, its horrible! But as you may know, people in forums will defend it and say its not so.
Yeah, I care too but we are on a sinking ship, actually it sunk a while ago but I still manage to drop a 4k DVD in my 4k player once in a while.. but I have to admit with music Im pretty much using Apple's so called "lossless" music service now, mostly because I am always mobile.
Still have my Cds... but whatever.
The cool part is my wife is the same way about this subject.

Apple Music is all lossless now, it started in June 2021 (at no extra cost) they state all 75 million songs, I even do full lossless on my phone but I chose the intermediate one which is CD quality on my phone of 16bit @44.1khz because using bluetooth you wont have any benefit above that.

"Apple Music will also make its catalog of more than 75 million songs available in Lossless Audio. Apple uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) to preserve every single bit of the original audio file. This means Apple Music subscribers will be able to hear the exact same thing that the artists created in the studio.
To start listening to Lossless Audio, subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music can turn it on in Settings > Music > Audio Quality. Here, they can choose different resolutions for different connections such as cellular, Wi-Fi, or for download. Apple Music’s Lossless tier starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz (kilohertz), and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz and is playable natively on Apple devices. For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless all the way up to 24 bit at 192 kHz.1

I hate to break it to you alarmguy but, ALL 4k material is compressed. If completely uncompressed, a 4K movie would be enormous, too large to fit on your computer's hard drive, let alone on a Blu-ray disc, so even those on disc are compressed to some degree. But, streamed movies are compressed considerably further. Frankly, my old eyes can't see the difference between a movie streamed in 4k and a movie streamed in 1080p any more than my old ears can hear a difference between a CD and a good well encoded higher bit rate MP3.

Its a ***** getting old huh!?!?

This is the key, you said it and you are correct;
"a 4K movie would be enormous, too large to fit on your computer's hard drive, let alone on a Blu-ray disc, so even those on disc are compressed to some degree. But, streamed movies are compressed considerably further."

Thanks for the correction, its the same with my major TV stations on my over the air antenna. My major TV stations are far better through my attic TV antenna then what cable TV could deliver. Its was so noticeable it was ridiculous when we first cut cable 10+ years ago.

Ton of info on "streaming 4k" vs "4k blu ray" Yes, without question I can tell the difference (and my wife too) But is streaming 4k good enough, ummm, yeah but its a treat using the 4K blu-ray player we have a few times a year.
https://www.reviewgeek.com/6416/is-it-better-to-watch-a-4k-movie-on-blu-ray-or-through-streaming/

BTW - its kind of why I think people will not be lining up to dump their 4k TVs (as much as the industry wants them too) and replace with 8K TVs
We have reach the point of "good enough' and why with music, bluetooth, inferior to even a plain old DVD the public could care less. Honestly my wife and I VERY picky with audio and 95% of music is listening through our bluetooth earbuds because its good enough and actually REALLY good when you use good products.
Im certainly happy with Apple TV 4K streaming and renting streaming movies through them or Vudu if we cant get a Bluray at Redbox and even Redbox here does not rent 4k only blurry when you are lucky.. and the TV makers want to take us to 8k now, generate more sales ...

I hear that these are really good television sets?

The "works in a drawer" concept turned out to be hugely unreliable, due to bad connections on and among the modules in the drawer. They missed the point that solid-state circuitry should not require servicing frequently, or even ever during the life of the product. The best TV of the the early 70's was Zenith, which still used a traditional unitary chassis.
