How does Sunoco compare to Top Tier brands additive-wise? Can't find much about this so I assume they just meet the EPA minimum.

I think Sunoco is like a TT, but probably just didn't want to pay for the certification.

FWIW:

About Sunoco Fuel
Sunoco fuels significantly exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gasoline detergency standards. All grades of Sunoco fuel contain the same level of detergent. In addition to government-mandated detergency tests, Sunoco fuels are subject to additional testing by an independent, third-party lab to further ensure their quality. Learn more about our safety and environmental policies.

Sunoco fuels contain additives such as corrosion inhibitors and antioxidants, which help to ensure quality and promote a longer “shelf life”, which means the gasoline will last longer between uses. Gasoline filters trap particles as small as 10 microns from the gasoline before it goes into your tank

Out of interest;

Given the choice between two fuels at the same octane, same age/freshness, from stations with the same turnover:

One is high BTU ethanol free non oxygenated gasoline with half the EPA mandated detergents,
The other is E10 standard stuff from Costco or other discount retailer, with double the mandated detergents

What do you choose and why?

My local Sunoco is the real deal with their own trucks filling the tanks and its always clean but all my cars get lousy mileage on their 87 octane which they all call for.

Your question is not so simple... first of all.. there would likely be a price difference..
If price was same, Id choose the E10, since I dont think ethanol to be that terrible and more detergent would be more important than being ethanol free.. thats my opinion.

When you say half the EPA mandated detergents, do you mean less than the minimum level?

Well, if I'm looking for a fuel for something like a standby generator where I need the fuel to last a long time without degrading, I'd go for a non-oxygenated fuel.

For EVERYTHING else, including cars that sit a few months (but not a year or more...) at a time, I'd go with E10. I was a huge E10 skeptic but after living with the stuff for 15 years, I believe E10 is far, far better than MTBE-boosted fuel ever was in terms of performance for the dollar, and keeping the fuel system clean and healthy. I've had far fewer fuel system issues on E10 than I did back during the MTBE (and tetraethyl lead, for that matter) years.
