well its time for me to get a transmission flush and was wondering what type of fluid you guys recommend. I think my transmission calls for Dexron III. I was wondering if I could use Valvoline Maxlife ATF? Also what is "friction modifier"? Im new to this whole fluid stuff so any help is appreciated. THanks!

Your vehicle does not require friction modifier in the transmission. You can use any off the shelf Dex 3. Most people would recommend using Dexron 6 which is now backspecced for use in your transmission. Also Mobil 1 ATF is suitable.

just run any dexron III and a bottle of red lubegard and you'll be fine.

Nothing wrong with Maxlife, very high quality ATF!

I thought 2005 would be calling for Dex 6. That'd be my choice. Picked up some at Wallmart for 3.77/quart I believe.

what brand did you pick up? i might have to stop by WM on the weekend and check it out.

Supertech. Bought 20 quarts because they actually had them in stock! Usually only see about 4-6 at a time. Plus I wanted to make sure I had plenty as I did a cooler line flush as well.

Friction modifier aka Lubegard aka Platinum is a once size fits most additive that places put in the transmission to help the Dexron 3 convert to a bunch of other specs. It's also used as one of those "eliminates noise and shudder" additives.

I would read:
http://www.imakenews.com/lng/e_article000384801.cfm

Dex 6 is compatible with your AT.

I have had great success using Royal Purple MaxATF in Dex III applications( most recently an 05 Silverado ). Redline ATf is another excellent option. IMO they are about equal performance wise so go by availability and cost.

Redline also has D6 which is their Dex VI but it is not licensed so they can't call it Dex VI...
