Suggestions for Transporting a Vintage Car

Friend of mine needs to move a '66 Mustang about 20 miles on surface streets in So Cal. Car has the complete front suspension removed as well as the engine and trans are out.
1- Are the normal run of the mill tow companies equipped to handle special requests? I know they can if car is damaged from a traffic accident.
2- Will we have to buy/build a special dolley to bolt to the existing suspension mounting holes,etc? Then purchase 2-4 wheels from a place such as Harbor Freight or a salvage outlet.
3- Will one of those single axle dolleys from U-Haul work, as long as the car is strapped down from shifting? (Least favorite because of risk of damage or accident)

Some tow companies have tow dollies for such a need as yours and if the car is positioned correctly it can possibly be moved with a conventional wrecker,i would contact a local wrecker service and inquire as to their ability to handle your or rather your friends situation,a rollback truck may be needed i'm sure it can be done safely though.

For towing your friends car I would have it hauled on a flatbed. That way you do not have to worry about anything. I have used that for my car when it needed to be taken to the garage. I was happy with the service.

I agree, I like the flatbed idea. But, there is no front wheels or suspension to facilitate it being winched up onto the flatbed. Wish someone like Jegs or Summit sold a kit or universal device to allow the hobbyist to get his car to body shop, engine shop, etc. I think best COA(course of action) will be to call some tow companies to see if they can help. Or fab up a device to allow car to roll on its own.

Any competent wrecker company will have dollies for this use.

I would spend the extra and get a closed transport - would save it from rain/hail/snow.stones etc etc.
The difference between open and closed was little, as I found out when I had my BMW transported from MN to NC.

PS: I just saw that it was only for 20 miles. So closed is overkill probably..
