Nah, after the first couple guys were down the others probably would have got the [censored] out of there!

I can see myself quickly becoming interested in this as a hobby. I'm already excited about going to the range. A friend told me to never get a gun because it will quickly consume your life. I can see how he's right.

Just don't make any compromises in the way of hobby or entertainment with this purchase. If you want something to play with later go ahead but make sure this one is dedicated to serving you in the area of home defense.

This is only my own opinion but the guns I actually like to shoot are not really good for HD and the vice versa. My current carry weapon is KelTec's little 380. It's a tool that is suited to my needs for a CCW but it's also no fun for me to shoot; just like all the little double-action autos and revolvers I've used. I'd much rather shoot an AK, .30-06 or even a single-action full sized pistol but those are all harder to pocket.

Yeah, guns are like potato chips, you can't just stop at one.

Right, most civilian firefights involve less then six shots,

The cops on the other hand often go wild spraying bullets en mass, one fires and they all join in so the first guy doesn't look trigger happy.

I always say better to have ammo left over than not enough. Thats why I would rather have my 7 plus 1 380 than a 5 shot S&W 38 special snubbie.

One thing I encountered when 2 men broke into my neighbor's car was that I almost shot a guy because I thought he had a gun in his hand and it turned out to be a flashlight. It was dark, I'd just yelled in a commanding voice to get out of the car and lay down on the ground. He wheeled around and I saw something glimmer. I had probably less than a second to decide his fate and mine. No sense in either of us dying over a stereo or something inside of a car.

I learned a valuable lesson. I'd prefer to avoid a fight if I could, unless it's absolutely necessary.

I've always been interested in being able to not only stop someone, but also vehicles. I figure the "get-away" car is something I'd like to disable, if the opportunity presents itself.

I have a Winchester 1300 8 shot. I've seen it drop 3" trees at 25' away using 000 buckshot. I've put pistol grips on the front/back and carry extra ammo on the side.

I also have a 9mm Sig P239 with 4 clips on the dresser and a 686+ S&W with .357 158 grain hollow points.

The rest of my guns are in safes.

Out of those 3, I've instructed my wife to use the 9mm or 686 to protect herself only and call the police. That is her job. Mine is to protect her and property. There have been instances where I've confronted people with the shotgun and wished I had the pistol with me and vice-versa. Now I always grab both.

Personally, I do not want to have a fight inside my house. I value my life and those inside, my home, belongings, etc. I'd rather a guy bleed out while lying in the yard or driveway. Be silent and think. Obviously, they haven't and this is to your advantage. If any opportunity, I value surprise and confront the situation with malice at a location that is convenient to me.

I'm a big guy. A 357 round or a shotgun with pistol grips does not affect me, especially with adrenaline. I would suspect that most people should choose a size round and gun based upon their comfort level and accuracy with it.

I've learned from my confrontations that most people do not want a fight. Be confident and control the situation, otherwise forget it.

If you truly want to feel more secure in your home, you can't just limit yourself to picking up 1 firearm. There are times when I would pick up my semi-auto and other times I would rather have a shotgun in my hand. Another thing to consider is the size of your house. I have a multi-level, therefore I have firearms on each floor. If a dog or bear (nearly happened this year) is attacking your child or wife in the backyard, you don't want to have to run up to your underwear drawer to get it.

The day I'm holding people at gunpoint in my neighbors yard is the day I start looking for a new place to call home.

Beware the man with one firearm, he's likely to know how to use it.

This is a situation that requires some careful thought. Many states do not allow lethal force by citizens in defense of property, only in defense of life...and in some states, your action would be prosecuted. In general, to apply lethal force for self-defense, it must be necessary and proportional. The threat to life must be there (ability, intent, opportunity)...but it's a threat to life...not to property. By being in the neighbor's yard...the argument would have to be that you were protecting their life...and that may not hold up...

One man's approach: let them have the "stuff" in my yard or on the 1st floor...I'll be at the top of the stairs with the H&K and its tritium sights...any move towards where the people are is clear intent...and lethal force is undeniably justified...

He was a good neighbor so we watched out for each other. Things went downhill after he left. I've written several times on BITOG about the ghetto I used to live in for 23 years. It was tough. It's also given me an appreciation on peace and quiet, as well as to be thankful for the nice neighborhood I live in now.

For the record, I was in my yard when I did the confronting. I was using a maple tree for shielding and balance. Those guys never saw me until I started giving them commands and, by that time, I was less than 10' from them.

Completely agree...and I have no issue appling lethal force to end a threat...but my point is this: don't deliberately put yourself in the position to be judged poorly by "seeking out" the conflict. Using lethal force as a private citizen in order to protect property could be construed as seeking out the conflict and make you prosecutable...If you sought the conflict, then it was not self-defense...If you tried to avoid it, and it still happened...then it was self-defense...

And Mike - I am not saying that you sought out the conflict...I am saying that one has to be thoughtful in handling a situation...not slow to respond...but thoughtful and aware of the necessity for lethal force...

Glad to hear you're out of there, don't want to be the last of the Mohicans in a neighborhood like that.

With your $500 price range you can get a nice piece. If I was in your shoes, I would get a Glock 17 and add a rail mounted light such as a TLR-1 or TLR-2 light/laser.

The Springfield XD, Beretta 92FS, Smith&Wesson M&P, and used Sig Sauer P226 could be bought in that price range also.

I am in the same boat. I want a gun for target and home protection. I can no longer handle the recoil of a .44 or a.357 so I am considering a 9mm. At the moment what I am thinking is Glock 19,Walther PPQ,S&W MP.
Anyone got any advice?
Thanks WW

Look into a CZ75 or 75 compact. Its all steel and high capacity so it will have VERY tame recoil for a 9mm. Col. Cooper, the man behind so many self defense pistol techniques called it the greatest combat 9mm ever made. It will run you about the same as a polymer gun, but is known for its ergonomics and performance.
