Suggest my next oil change

2004 Taurus 3.0L Duratec 70k. Will do 5k annually, say 80% highway.

Currently Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 & Bosch Premium filter for 1 year. Prior to that Synpower 5w30 & Motorcraft filter every year for 2 years. Prior to that Motorcraft Syn Blend 5w20 & Motorcraft filter every 6 months for 3 years.

It needs 6 quarts. I have a choice from:

5 quarts of Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20 SN
1 quart of Mobil 1 0w40 SN
15 quarts of Valvoline Synpower 5w30 SM

Filter choice:

Motorcraft FL820s
Bosch Premium
possibly a Mobil 1

I would use the synpower and motorcraft for at least a 7K interval.

If most trips are more than 10 miles, then you can easily do 7-8k/18mo with 5k annually with any oil you have in your stash.

It just depends how much money you want to spend. Take a good look at the Castrol, Mobil and Liqui Moly oil finder sites for ideas on oil weight and types. Then look for a good special offer.

Id use the synpower and use up the older SM before the SN oils. Synpower and the FL-820s

Since you need 6 quarts, why not find a coupon deal at either a BJ's or Costco? I know about every other month one of the other is running a deal on oils. Both have M1 and run deals, and I know BJ's every couple months runs on Formula Shell Synthetics which I always jump on. 6 quart of the Shell stuff for under $20 is a great deal.

I only recommend this because both of these products sell in the 6 quart cases.

The LM oil finder says use a 5w30 or a 5w40, I am sure Mobil will include a 0/40. Anything thinner in an older engine is asking for an oil leak and bad wear rates when hot, so a 5w30 major brand oil will do just fine, BUT the OCI listed is only 5K miles. Try something more expensive like a Longlife 5w30 fully synthetic if you want to extend beyond 5K, which should be possible if you do mostly highway driving.
From your list I would use the Valvoline 5/30, then do a used oil analysis at 5K miles to see how it holds up.

Wow so many divergent views!

My original thinking was the following:

Oil

5 quarts Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20
1 quart of either the Synpower or the Mobil 1 0w40. Which would you choose and why?

My thinking here is that

1) It's good to continue with the same chemistry ie continue using Quaker State Ultimate Durability before then going back to Synpower which I would then use for 2 consecutive OCIs.

2) I was interested to see if I could tell a difference between 5w30 and 5w20 in the same brand (Quaker State Ultimate Durability)

Filter

FL820S. Even though I prefer the Bosch Premium, it's best to use older filters first.

On the other hand, is there a chance that 5w20 will clean better than 5w30 and it's better to pair that with the far more efficient Bosch Premium?
