So, I've read on here that people have actually picked up a an oil filter and preformed the suck/blow test. What exactly would this test prove?

The integrity of the anti drain back seal at room temp.
Not to say this could not change at operating temps.

If you have two of the same filter's, one seals when you blow into it, the other leak's air, chose the one that seals.

Why do intermittantly people have "oil starved startup clatter"? The rubber drain back seal is bad.

Gee, I put a new X-brand filter on, and the 1+ second startup clatter went away!
All brands have a poorly set rubber gasket once in a while.

That makes sense to me. I just tested three of the filters in my stash. The K&N didn't hold any kind of a seal at all, the Bosch didn't either but was a little better than the K&N. I tried both of the Hastings filters and they sealed tight and no air went through. Not really scientific but I know which filter I'm using for my next change. The weird thing is the Hastings has a nitrile valve and the others a silicone. Maybe the nitrile is more pliable at normal temps.

First, it's kind of hard to get your lips flat onto the hole in the filter to blow. My nose was mashed against the gasket, and I don't have a big nose.

But the results of my few blows were that the Baldwin was pretty tight, whereas the Wix and Purolators both were leaky. Again, maybe I just wasn't getting my mouth on the filter right and this was only one filter of each brand. Now I could check 6 Balwins as I have the stash. We'll see, may need an adapter though.

I agree but you do see a difference though, don't you?

hey it may or may not tell you anything about the valve inside but one thing is for sure people will not stay in the same aisle with you while you are doing that so at least you can take your time and shop without other people interrupting you!!!

Unless the men in the white suits come for you. I will not suck/blow in the store asiles. Only for research purposes.

Yes, I did notice a big difference that the Baldwins were tighter than Wix and Purolator. Need more testing, maybe get one of those CPR mouthpieces and try again. I should try all 6 of my precious Baldwins.

Haha, CPR for an oil filter!

I've done that test at the store and got funny looks.

Interestingly the Amsoil EAO felt as if it didn't have an ADBV. It leaked badly. I hope that changes once it has oil in it but I tried a used EAO (I know, gross but I had to find out) and could blow oil and air out.

I may try the RP filter this time around if it shows that it seals during this test just to see if the oil pressure light goes out any quicker.
