So, I'm a member on another automotive forum, and occasionally someone mistakenly says "Mercon III" instead of Dexron III/Mercon. So, I correct them and tell them there is no such thing as Mercon III. Now, another VERY knowledgeable and well-respected member says that there IS such thing as Mercon III and he claims to actually own a bottle of Motorcraft Mercon III. I told him to name single application that specifically calls for Merc III (NOT regular Mercon, V, SP, or LV). He has yet to get back to me. Is this guy full of it, or does Mercon III exist?

No. They went from Mercon to Mercon V.
It isnt even supposed to mean 'five'. Its just Mercon Vee.
People were so used to Dexron III/Mercon being the same bottle when Mercon V came out most people that I know call it five.
Probably the same reason he thinks he has Mercon III. I bet it says Dexron III/Mercon.

Yep, I'm betting he has a universal fluid and misread the label. There is no Mercon III.

Sorry guys, but there was a Mercon III, just that Ford really didn't label and spec, they just made sure each license kept up with the lates spec.
Mercon was released in 87
"Improved Mercon" (which could be interpreted as Mercon II or III was released in 92. I don't know the rest of the dates, but when Mercon V came out, the regular "Dexron III/Mercon" products were meeting Mercon IV specs.

You have to be old to remember some of these things that slipped by in history.
