Submarine Sounds

As soon as I own my first condo/home, I plan to install an old-timey submarine klaxon as my doorbell.

Workmate has installed the "bells" app on his I-phone,

It's a lot less annoying than I thought that it was going to be.

When it comes to movie sounds, the sounds of silenced guns are a classic, fake sound that somehow became the norm.

First off, I was not a "Bubble Head", but I did take one special ops trip, for three weeks, on a sub. I was a very nieve E3 at the time.

When you watch those old WWII movies about the German sub in the Atlantic, or the American sub in the Pacific, you hear the pinging when the surface ship is using their sonar.

Well, --- its true. You do hear that. We were in shallow waters and Soviet Destroyers knew exactly where we were.

Shook me up enough that I never put in for one of those trips again.

I look up to those Submarine guys. As they say, "The Best Marine is a Submarine".

I spent 12 years on Submarines, would still be doing it (well i would be close to retirement)if I had not gotten sick and had to get out. Some of the sounds can still be heard on modern Submarines. Old boats and fast attacks have active sonar, you know the ping. Certain modern submarines do not. The advantage of active sonar is you get a good range to target, the disadvantage is the target gets a good range to you!

I can remember doing battle groups ops, laying in the rack and listening to the uneasy sounds of sonar buoys. They are loud and you can hear them through the pressure hull.

It doesn't make sense to me that any modern sub wouldn't be equipped with active sonar. It's a very useful tool.

I have it as my phone ringer. When it goes off people around always say "Dive, Dive".

Depends on what subs purpose is.

I can't imagine any major submarine not being equipped with both an active and passive sonar array, though I'm sure the active unit would only be used in very specific circumstances.

As stated above, the active ping tells everyone where you are so it largely defeats the point of a sub hiding in the water.

Especially a boomer trying not to be found.

Magneto hydrodynamic drive would be nice to have....
