Yes. I tend to believe that the base end bypass valves are better, since the bypassing oil doesn't pass across the filter media, potentially dislodging particulate and putting it back in to the engine. A small thing, but if everything else is equal on a filter, I prefer the base end bypass valves.
I agree, unless the filter is mounted vertically with the base down like on a Subaru engine, or the one on my Tacoma V6.

So you think gravity would overcome flow path?
IMO, it could be possible for debris to come off and fall to the bottom (base down) right where the base end bypass valve is after the engine is shut off. Next cold start-up and that debris could get sucked right in and through the bypass valve.

Also, when oil is flowing through an oil filter, the flow will keep pressure on the debris down in the media. So on a filter with a dome end bypass valve, it would be hard for any debris in the media to come off since flow would still be moving through the media while the bypass valve was also cracked open.

While I agree with Zee on the applications that are base end towards the ground, all of mine are base end up so I don't have an issue with the NAPA 7055, and for me, this filter hits the bullseye when comparing price, performance, construction and availability. Less than $4 during sales, listed as 21 micron capable, built like a tank for its size, and NAPAs are everywhere. WIX are more expensive, and unless you're stealing the NAPA Platinums, they're not worth it compared to the Fram Ultra. I've used probably 20 of the 7055s over the past 5 years, on EJ25s and FB25s.

But I also agree with Al, and I know Zee has a soft spot for Ultra's capabilities... so, you will certainly be able to use the XG7317 with dome end bypass with no ill effects. I use the XG3593A on my EJ25s if I run out of the 7055 filters. But that's because there's room, and base end to the sky.

gee guys thinks for ruining my day...j/k I've used nothing but 7055 base end down on my 20' forester....love the price/performance ratio of them...but now I have to wonder maybe I need to change to a dome end bpv filter....ugh..

It doesn't matter unless you are into splitting hairs and think that those split hairs are really THAT important. I happily use the Fram Ultra and standard Wix/Napa Gold on my 2021 Outback and former 2018 Outback without putting to much thought into it.

I use the “fat” AA130 equivalent from Toyota on a friend’s Forester. It screws on, no oil pressure lights. Yes, it can be a little scary seeing TOYOTA on the filter to the uneducated eye.

Do the Subaru OEM filters have the bypass valve in the base end on engines that mount the filter vertical with base down?

Since I can’t edit - it’s the 90915-YZZS1 filter for the FA20 used in the BRZ/FR-S/FT-86. It’s a Thai Denso filter.
