How can this be? Read on a flat surface, pre-cold start.

Wouldnt worry about it to much. Oil level on subaru's is hard to get exact.
but the amount between the dots is either a liter (33.8oz) or a quart (32oz)
so seeing that dipstick I would have added about 10-12oz.

I settled on checking after sitting at least a couple hours as the "correct" oil level.
if it varies 1/4" inch either way I dont care.

Driven Subie's for years, and this has happened to me before as well. Not really sure why. I've just learned that if I get a low reading unexpectedly, to wait until another drive cycle is complete (as long as the level is safe) and check again after shutdown/draindown on a cold engine. 99% of the time the oil level seems to correct. I'm not sure where the hidden oil goes, and why it only happens randomly, but it is "normal."
