Saw on the news that the Subaru plant in Indiana is going to build the Camry.
Plan is 100,000 units per year.
Productions starts April 20

Is it because Toyota's domestic Camry plant can't keep up with demand?

Intersting... I wonder what this will mean for the future of domestic availability of subaru cars, which are apparently slow selling.

The legacy wagon is on our short list of cars to buy for the fiancee (along with the saab 9-3 wagon, which has the top spot).

Given our experience with toyota vehicles in severe service, I hesitate to buy anything toyota as superior... I only hope that long term subaru stays viable as a player in the US car market, without toyota messing it up for those of us who want a viable alternative to the inferior camry.

I say inferior on good grounds basedd upon our experience with a 01 that has a lousy trans, 3 out of 4 fan speeds burnt out, poor paint, poor interior materials, etc.

The Indianapolis Subaru plant is still making the Legacy(refresh 08) and will add the 08 Impreza (total redesign) as well.

Subaru Reports February Sales

Mar 7, 2007

source: Subaru of America

Impreza reports double digit gain
CHERRY HILL, N.J., March 1, 2007 -- Subaru of America, Inc. today reported February sales of 12,875 total units. Sales of the Impreza model line remain strong as it recorded a double digit increase of 14 percent over the same period last year.

Subaru B9 Tribeca posted 964 units for the month. Subaru Legacy recorded of 5,776 unit sales, while the Outback accounted for 4,282 units of that line for the month. Subaru Forester recorded 2,971 units in February, while Baja posted 217 units for the month. Subaru Impreza posted a strong 2,946 units in February.

Subaru MAY be moving to Front-wheel drive offerings in the future. Also, Toyota might have bought interest in Subaru in order to capture it's AWD technology for use in some of their cars.

Then again, I might not know anything about it. B~) Time will tell.

Yeah, and the grille of the "B-9 Tribeca" keeps looking more and more like that of an Edsel!

I still laugh when I recall a car magazine jab at that car's name. The author (I forget which one) was wondering why the "B-9" part of the name. He speculated that perhaps they were trying to distinguish it from "malignant" Tribecas. Frankly, viewed from the front, all Tribecas are malignant. Very interesting that we're now going to have Subaru Camrys.

JHZR2, Sorry to hear about your bad experinces. I hate anyone to have any issues with any car they own! It is too bad that every company makes a few lemons! What has always blown my mind is how some lemons have multiple issues. I mean what are the odd's that multiple systems/mechanical failures would cluster in one vechile. We know it happens all the time but how? I once worked with a guy at GM that had 36 pages of warranty work done to his truck under warranty. Now We were not looking at the write ups just single line entry's of the warranty code for each indivudual vist/complaint.

I belive he still has the truck. So much replaced on it that almost nothing other then the engine was origanal and sheetmetal. In the end we even found out that GM had installed the wrong size bearings on two of the main caps wich was creating a nock. They would not warranty it though since the powertrain people claimed that it was not a durability issue even though it knocked. My point being that what were the odd's that almost everyting onhis truck wich was well maintained would fail under warranty or shortlyout of warranty? I have seen this type of thing happen with almost every Make but it still amaze's me that it happens!

P.S. Ignorance is bliss so what ever you do stay away from Subie site!!! You do not want to hear from the guy that got the Subie lemon lest you lose sleep!

I never liked the Tribeca's either. I'm a fan of the pre 2006 Impreza STi's

I also thought the SVX was a pretty cool car.

Perhaps if Subaru wasn't so PROUD of their vehicles they wouldn't be so slow to sell. I'd actually love to get into an AWD vehicle, but when I priced them on Subaru.com I quickly wrote them off.

The Subaru I'm interested in is the Outback sedan. (I can't shake the stigma that goes along with owning a wagon..I just can't make myself want one). I really dig the sedan though.

I find their pricing to be very un-competetive for a base-model 4-cylinder sedan, AWD or not.

OUTBACK 2.5i LIMITED SEDAN
Starting at $26,395*

If I desired a wagon, the price goes down significantly.

OUTBACK 2.5i BASIC
Starting at $21,995*

I don't see this as a great marketing strategy in a country that still favors sedans.

Ummm.... The problem isn't the fact that you're pricing a sedan, the problem is that you're pricing an Outback Limited.

Price a Legacy Special Edition (AWD) sedan.... it is about $6,000 cheaper.

A little off topic, but my wife and I both love her Legacy sedan. For the first time in my life, I'm finding myself getting a little brand loyal. Must....resist.....

I just think it's a little rediculous that you can't buy an Outback sedan for the same price as a wagon. Why put a $6000 + divide between them? I happen to like the looks and stance of the Outback more than the Legacy. Seems like a catch 22 they've got going with that car. They're rare on the dealer lots because they're not popular, but they're unpopular because of the pricing. C'mon, Subaru....

I think they are not overpriced. My daughter is looking at an Impreza Wagon. Under 20K. Considering you have AWD antilock, curtain airbags, etc. Its about the same price as a Civic.

Partnering with Fuji Heavy Industries (aka Subaru) in Lafayette was cheaper and faster than building a new plant from the ground up.

I'm only about 80 miles from the Lafayette plant.

I'm sure they had the resources going for them. Fuji Heavy in Lafayette assembled the Isuzu Rodeo, Rodeo Sport (Amigo) and Axiom from inception in ~1991, to their death in 2004. They were well built trucks. No doubt they will do a good job on the Camry.
