Any experience with aftermarket ATFs in a Subaru that requires ATF-HP (not the old Dex III spec ATF)? It's time for another 15K mile drain and fill (approx 4 out of 10 quarts) in my '07 Outback, and I'm deciding whether to go aftermarket or use ATF-HP from the dealer again.

My research has found the following that specify Subaru ATF-HP on the Product Data Sheet:
- Amsoil Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF
- Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc

I know that both are good products, and it's safe to assume that neither will damage my transmission.

I've you have tried either of those (or another product) where Subaru ATF-HP is specified, please post your results. Firmer, smoother shifting? Better gas mileage (one can hope)? Transmission exploded

? Let us know!

I asked on a Subaru specific forum, but got only 1 answer relating a positive experience with Amsoil. So I'm broadening my audience, hoping someone has tried the MaxLife in a Subaru that requires ATF-HP.

I have used the MaxLife on other vehicles that require Dexron III with excellent results, so I'm hoping to hear that it also works well when ATF-HP is spec'd. Nothing wrong with Amsoil, but it does cost more than MaxLife or genuine Subaru ATF-HP.

I think they will all work well. So far, I have only used the Subaru stuff in my 2006 Forester 4AT. I'm thinking about trying Valvoline next.

I'm stuck with WS fluid on my 2005 V8 4x4 4Runner, but am switching the diffs and TC to Motul. I have heard of less-than-stellar results with anything else in the transmission of that one.
