If school admin. can't handle this then they need to be fired as they are incompetent. Handling unruly kids is part of their job description that they volunteered for when they took the job.

Unless there was violence or the threat of there is NO reason to call the police. It's huge waste of tax payer resources as is the salaries of the school admin.

people you need to read the o.p. more with more care.the police were not dispatched.there are cops stationed there.school security, campus resource, school officer there are a number of names but most schools from junior high up have them.a sign of the breakdown in society teaching kids how to behave. little brat will catch it from her parents who will have pay the fine, since they apparently did not teach her to mind at an early age.

Just take away her cosmetics, curling iron, and blow drier for two weeks and she won't leave the house.

I agree about the parenting but there is NO reason to issue a CRIMINAL citation for talking on a cell phone.

Ah ..PysOps ..not outright torture ..but exquisitely painful and anxiety producing. I like it.

That's a bit extreme. Take away the phone, fire off a letter to the parents, give the kid back the phone after a week. Unless the parents show up at school and take possession of the phone at the end of the day.

Talk about educating complacency.

That's why the discipline portion has been outsourced to the police. The cops are just about the only people who can discipline a kid and not get sued.
A good attorney can work wonders. you sue the whole chain.

High schools have their own on site police most of the time. I don't understand why some of you think this is a waste of your tax payer dollars. So I guess when you call the cops to break up YOUR neighbors house party at 2 am, that's a waste of MY tax dollars.

If the girl would have owned up to the phone in the first place and not taken it to the level that she had to be searched then there probably wouldn't have been any charges placed. However she did so that is probably the result of what she did. The schools any more have very strict guidelines with kids since they know that they can get sued very easily. Blame the parents that never pay attention to what goes on with their kid until they get in trouble and then it is the school that is the problem and not their darling little angel. The parents will probably pay the fine because the little darling was being treated unfairly and end up suing the school and the taxpayers will end up footing the bill.

Tempest, tempest, tempest....
Have you been in a school lately? Kids know that nobody has a right to lay a hand on them at school, certainly not the teacher. So the kid can just sit there and mouth off, and basically only the police can handle them, or with prior parental consent, a child youth worker with training can remove the child. Teachers try to avoid escalating things to this level but sometimes the kid makes the choice. A few times my wife has had a kid do this and she just takes the rest of the class somewhere else in the school. Usually without an audience the principal can talk the student down and life goes on after a meeting with the parents, and maybe a short suspension.

Who knows what actually happened at this case, most likely the student started resisting the police and was arrested for that, not for texting...

If you actually read the arrest report, on Page 3, she was TOLD she was arrested for using the phone in class, refusing the teacher's orders, and lying.

THAT IS NOT reason to arrest a kid. There was NO violence or weapon. There was no refusal to go to the office or vacate the premises. And it appears that the school had to ask HER for a number to contact her parents. I guess they didn't bother to get that before hand.

If this is such a big deal, she should be suspended for a time or expelled.

If you're saying it's needlessly silly, sure.

Now if you can mandate that her parents make her a civilly obedient student ..under whatever means they see fit ..and you're willing to accept potential unintended side effects and claim that you endorsed the notion with loud proclamation as an advocate of such things ..taking full credit for "that's how I wanted it to be handled ..so I'm truly supportive of how it turned out ..and if it means that I have to admit to "the rest of the story" in concession of less then favorable outcomes"..then fine.

..but I don't think that's the case ...

this could be a case of a teacher overreacting.

or it could be a case of a disrespectful student, she could
have been loud and disruptive in the class.she may also have a history of being a pita and this opportunity was taken to teach her a lesson.maybe she will learn from it.in other words she may have brought this on herself.scr*w her.her decisions brought her to this point.

i have a bit of a different perspective than most people.i have been a correctional officer for 20+ years.i see a lot of young people coming into the system.many of them are diagnosed as having mental health issues(anger management, acting out, control issues, authority issues).after you deal and talk with them a little while you realize a few things.most come from a fatherless household.most have not been taught to respect others person, property and space.most have not been taught to work for something, the concept of delayed gratification is foreign to them, nothing is ever their fault, and they should always get another chance.
in other words they are not crazy, they just never had any home training or discipline.
this girl is at a crossroads right now.hopefully she will straighten out after this.
p.s. lying to an officer will get you in trouble real quick, almost as quick as refusing a lawful directive.both of which this girl did

(...) Maybe the kid is better off for it then. There's always wolves and whatnot, but then again some kids just won't be dealt with... period.
