Perhaps a large pair of channel lock pliers up near or on the base plate? Preferably a newer pair with sharp teeth.

This is something of a Captain Obvious comment that won't help the OP, but I have measured the gasket protrusion on the filters for my cars and in each case the filter thread pitch would have the can bottomed out against the engine block at 1 revolution past initial contact. Any tightening beyond that is not gasket compression, it is baseplate distortion.
