Now that is a good question. My Camry has originals still at 162,000. No leaks and alignment shop said they are not in bad shape but probably could use replacing. Most people I know go at least 100,000 but again, wear is so gradual that it is hard to tell when new ones would be appreciated. Expensive suckers to boot compared to plain ole shocks

I've had good results with Bilstein shocks/struts; lasted 100K+ on my '89 S-10. I'm putting a set on my '00 Acura this week and hope to get the same mileage out of these too.

chinook, I believe that normal life of struts is indeed longer than the life of shock absorbers, but I also believe that because they wear out more slowly, people simply don't realize they're getting soft. My wife's '97 Escort has 75K-miles on them and they're soft--but are they worn out? An enthusiast who prefers firm damping would say 'yes'.

What is the approximate lifetime of a set of struts? I know they last longer than shocks, but how long? Do you do the same bounce test that you do with shocks?

Depends on where you drive, but IMO a set of struts ought to be good for 50 to 75k.

replaced 4 struts on an older sentra at around 120k.....expensive but when they go bad you loose a lot of control. Like being a NASCAR driver when passed by a truck...Worth the $$$

Most OEM struts are shot between 50,000 and 70,000 miles! Usualy you look for leaking and rebound. If they are not leaking and they stop bounceing with in 3 bounces or less they are normaly still decent or good. THis does not mean that their performance has not deminished from new spec.

If it is affecting handeling or brakeing they need to be replaced. Most Domestic brands need new mounts and strut bearings as well!

Hmmm... so since I have 170k miles on my 99 Protege, I should start thinking about having the struts replaced...

Did you get them replaced for free? I was wondering how their lifetime warenty was handled. I replaced all 4 of my aftermarket Tokicos on my 4x4 at about 90k after the front 2 started leaking. Cost was free from Tokico. Just keep your receipt.

I have to disagree here a little bit. The above won't show how they react to sharp jarring bumps or potholes. Usually you will notice a slamming of the suspension as the shocks/struts fail under this sudden hard acceleration. The ride will still seem soft on smooth road though and will still perform the 3 bounce test and may not be leaking.

I wonder the same thing about wear. I now have 202,000 miles on OEM suspension on a 95 Civic. No bounce whatsoever just what seems to be a harsh stiff ride compared to new cars now. People say you should replace them, I asked the Honda dealer they said they were fine and my mechanic. I do get a creak in the rear just in temps <35F but apparently normal in Honda's according to some.
