Strut tools

I'm replacing struts on 00 Impala, as of right now and 5hrs i've only got one replaced. It supposed to require a special tool to remove and reinstall the nut holding the strut assembly together. It's called a gm strut tool, has a socket with a hex in the middle, but the new monroe sensa-trac doesn't have a hex inset but another type of bit. No one seems to have these tools in stock. I can remove the old strut nuts with a impact gun, but I prefer not to tighten that way. I can use a open end wrench and one of those bits in a socket setup, but I'm afraid i'm not getting it tight enough. Anyone with helpful pointers... you know it's not a hard job except that one nut.

I just use an impact, as long as you don't go crazy with it you won't over torque it and it doens't have to be very tight. I have done quite a few GM struts like that and I've had zero problems.

I used one of those socket sets before to try to set the torque and it sheared off the strut stud. I had to then use the impact gun anyway.

I agree with tom slick about the impact gun. I use it and all the shops do as well. Like he said don't go crazy and you will be fine.

I have one lined up for the next three. I may not tighten with the impact.. i'll have to expirement don't want to tear up the new struts. I have the right bit and wrench just in case.

Another vote for the impact, this past summer I installed lowering springs on a civic, sunfire and an srt4. I used the impact on all of them, just backed the pressure on the impact down a bit.
