Struggle to commit to a 10,000Km oil change interval

Good morning, I have a 2025 Subaru Crosstrek with the 2.0L FB20 engine that I bought brand new last October. So far, I’m sitting at around 18,500 km and I’m almost due for my third oil change. I have been doing 5,000 km OCIs with my local Subaru dealership using their bulk-fill Castrol 0w16.

I had originally planned to move up to a 10,000 km oil change interval with Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, but even with all the data available, I’m struggling to make a decision. The factory oil change interval is 10,000 km, with no severe-duty schedule listed. I live in Ontario, Canada, and I never idle to warm up or really take short trips in general. Any establishment is far enough away from my house that the oil and coolant have a chance to come fully up to operating temperature.

Is my anal-retentive demeanor and constant anxiety about the condition of the car enough to justify sticking with the factory 10,000 km oil change interval? Or should I tighten that up to 6,000 km and never worry about it? I’m not concerned about the cost--it’s cheap to service in the grand scheme of things.

I was only born in 2001, but I can’t wrap my head around the modern mindset of trying to use a lubricant for as long as possible. My previous GDI Hyundai Accent would turn 0W-20 into water within about sixteen minutes. /shrug

If I read this correct 10,000 Km converts to 6200 miles...so yes you are good to go.
I was just about to post. We're only talking about 6000miles. That's really not a lot.

I understand people's issue with 10,000 miles (16000km)

But 6000 miles/10000km should be childs play for most modern lubricants******* especially if you're getting to temp regularly.

*******With a couple of vehicle exceptions.

Super thin oil + anything GDI, I'd be looking really hard at fuel dilution even running factory recommended intervals. UOAs are easy and inexpensive, then you can bump out intervals to whatever you like with peace of mind.

Do appropriate due diligence when choosing a lab; the most popular lab is also the most expensive and has spotty results.

I never go over 5000 miles on my Tiguan and that’s with a minimum 3.5 HT/HS oil.

And Blackstone’s fuel estimates are a lot worse than “spotty”.

You do not need to fret at all over a 10k km (6214 mile) oil change interval. That is very easy on the oil. Your concern about trying to get every last mile out of an oil change is reasonable. That practice is not for everyone. But a 10k km oci is not that. There will be plenty of life left in the oil, at 10k km, especially with the driving style you describe. Add to that your choice of Mobil 1 ESP motor oil, and your engine will be well protected, throughout the entire 10k km oci.

The suggestion for a used oil analysis may be interesting, but really not necessary. There are plenty of UOAs posted here, and surely more than one for the FB20, that will show that oil is still good at a 10k km oci, and most likely beyond. No speculation needed. Just use existing data.

Why.......
Just do what makes YOU comfortable.......
I do 6 months because all we do is short trip.

It isn't, but with Subaru's oil consumption issues, it's a concern.

By seeing dirt on tires in the pic and fact your car is on grass, you're in severe schedule already ... Lol
No matter what it's your decision, maybe consult with those who know Subies well before you make your mind.

We sometime fall into that blackhole of maintenance anxiety. I often do myself. Don't worry about this. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

Remember - its just a car.

Just give me second to get my flame suit on... :ROFLMAO:

I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my 2024 Crosstrek 5w-30 in summer and 0w-20 in winter, works great, Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 I tried and lots of clatter on cold starts and sluggish for the first 3-4 miles (no I cant recommend this oil) , just use a SQ-GF-7 approved and you will be fine, change at 4-5 thousand miles and a good filter (Purolator PL 14615 is decent filter. AMSOIL Signature Series is a thought if wanting longer oil change intervals.

IDK, I saw substantial and very concerning difference in used oil on my Sportage with 4k mi on oil vs 5k mi (6k km vs 8k km) and after I made my mind to stick with 4k mi OCI I never looked back. Sure it happens I run a couple hundred km over that interval; and sometimes I do oil change a bit early due to life schedules and choosing a bit early vs much later and over.
