2013 Altima Oil Change Interval Canada

I am thinking of buying a 2013 Nissan Altima. The maintainence guide and the dealer says you must change the oil every 6000 km [3600 miles] or 3 months. The 2013 Altima now calls for
0w-20 synthec oil. The say all cars operated in Canada are
severe service and require the 6000 km/3 month oil change.
The dealer cost for the oil change is over $100.00.with the tax.

If anyone else has bought a 2013 Altima in Canada what did the dealer tell you about the oil changes. I think the short interval is a total rip off, especily now with the synthec oil requirment

A bold way to have you open your wallet to drain it to the (d)stealer IMO. Have you actually read this in the manual to determine it's truthfulness? I would certainly believe that this is not true. Find a Manual on this car and let us know if this is true.FWIW --Oldtommy

Good reason to a DIY oil change.....and going south to purchase some cheaper 0w20 (M-1 or Pennzoil) at a US WalMart.

Also agree that 3600 miles is costly, stupid and wasteful. Should be able to go at least 5000K without any issues.

Yes 100 bucks is a rip off.
The best 0W-20 value is the Toyota 0W-20 at $5.75/L and if you don't want to change the oil yourself, and you do buy the Altima, take it to your local Toyota/Lexus dealer to change.
My neighbour gets it done with the TGMO 0W-20 for $38.
Now wouldn't that be a hoot!

They may be able to argue that all usage in Canada falls under severe service. Others, myself included, may disagree, but they do have a point, particularly for the average person who parks their vehicle outside all winter and short trips.

The oil requirements are as follows, taken from PP 9-2, 9-5, and 9-6 of the OM:

QR25DE - 0w-20 SN/GF-5 - going to be synthetic or a blend
VQ35DE - 5w30 SN/GF-5 - conventional is fine, with their standard recommendation of Nissan Genuine Ester Oil.

What does the factory manual say determines normal and severe service? Dealer opinions don't count as they often have an ulterior motive )

I think Nissan's approach to OCIs is the same as Mazda's. My owners manual specifically says that Canada automatically falls into severe service category. But my severe OCI is 8,000 km.

AFTER negotiating a price, tell them you'll only bite if they throw in free oil changes for the first 2 years.

Where do you live in New Brunswick?

My family lives in and around Saint John, so if they drive from Hampton to Saint John every day, that's all highway driving, no stop and go until you get into the city, and aside from the start up being in low temperature, doesn't really qualify as severe service, at any point in time in the year.

Now if you live on the East Side of Saint John, and you need to get to downtown area, then during the winter, that would qualify.

Personally, the chances of the engine having a warranty failure during the 50k miles the engine is covered is slim to none. My experiences with my '07 2.5S with the manual transmission gives me the personal experience to back those words with.

If it were my car, I would decide what's more important:

Having Nissan cover the warranty repair if one comes up, or saving $400 over the 3 year warranty period. Something tells me the engine costs just a wee bit more than $400.
