strong add packs

which conventional (20w and 30w) has the best add pack. i know the "standards" set have every brand pretty close, but does one rank higher than another?

does starting TBN relate to the additive package in a particular oil? if so who has the highest TBN?

what determines TBN retention, the oil, or the use of the oil? (probably some of both right??)
which conventional retains their TBN best in your experience?

Over the counter? Mobil Clean 5000 has a really nice add pack.

Well according to the tests by the american petroleum quality institute the weakest add pack was Valvoline. Id say mobil clean 5000, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Kendall Gt1 (blend), or Castrol GTX are your best PCMO's. However the Rotella 10w30 diesel conventional is stout as heck and would work in any car needing a 5w30 or 10w30 oil.

man, that is my dilemma.

I was settled on GTX , then i left it for m/c semi syn, now im looking at mobil clean 5000.

the couple of posts above are pushing me further away from the motorcraft to the clean 5000.

Trust me, you'll be doing just fine on that Pennzoil conventional. Stick with it. It's a great oil too! One reason I like the Mobil Clean 5000 right now is, it's on sale at O'Reilly's for $1.99 a quart.

I agree with this. The Exxon one looked good too.

No, I'm not budging...I like Pennzoil conventional...I like the peace of mind I have by not worrying anymore or fretting over which one is better. I don't look for sales, I like using one brand. And base on all I've heard, Pennzoil has been top notch for years.

Pennzoil Conventional and Motorcraft 5000 both look like good oils with nice add packs. I'll probably never get to try MC5K for myself simply because here its always among the most expensive dinos. I like GTX and used it often (and still will) because its consistently priced low here, and its good stuff. Lately Pennzoil conventional has been cheap here too, so I might get to try that one soon.

You want to define what you mean by strong add pack.

The TBN is determined primarily by the metallic detergent of calcium and boron, but may also be due to other chemicals.

The retention of TBN is determined by the quality of the TBN chemicals and their levels, and the operating conditions of the engine.

For what it's worth, Havoline, Pennzoil and Formula Shell seem to do well with longer drain intervals according to the used oil analysis in the conventional oil family.
