STP Power Steering Fluid

Hello all;

Recently changed out the PS fluid (baster method) using a quart of STP PS fluid. Car is a 2000 Impala and had about 70K miles on it at the time of the change.

Do you think this was a poor fluid choice? Better/worse than the factory fill?
Worth it to try Redline or go back to GM fluid?

The manual specs PS fluid, not ATF...or I would have put some Amsoil or Mobil 1 ATF in there.

I've noticed nothing different btw.

Hmmm...interesting.

I just did a P/S flush on my work van ('01 GMC Safari). I looked at all the available product at AutoZone and found only Valvoline SynPower Power Steering fluid actually mentioned being GM-compatible. The STP didn't say a word on its label about meeting ANY specs, so I passed on it...

My friend and I have been using Valvoline Synpower and Maxlife power steering fluids. While we 'think' we are doing a service to several vehicles, all are making bad groaning sounds. The steering seems to be the same, but the p/s pump and rack noise is VERY evident in every vehicle we've used it in. I have read on here that Havoline power steering fluid is quite good, possibly having exceptional cold temp performance. The Valvoline SynPower Power Steering fluid was said to have little synthetic (~10%). We have been torn up trying to find a good power steering fluid. More advice is appreciated!

I second that...

Contrary to what Mr. Steven has found, flushing my van's P/S made it noticeably quieter, not that it was especially loud to begin with.

I didn't pick SynPower because it had some arbitrary percentage of synthetic or was supposed to be some wunder-fluid, but because it was the only one that listed a GM spec on the label.

I like the fact that all of MY vehicles (the van is company-owned) are Fords and use plain ol' ATF in the P/S...

I have used the STP fluid in my 2003 Chevy Silverado for the last three years. I change it once a year. Put about 20K miles/year It works fine.
It actually steers better than the original fuild did in the winter.
