Stolen Credit Card Charges

I have a CC I don’t often use with the same bank that holds my mortgage. Today I signed in to look at my mortgage and found a charge for $356.98 on this CC. The baffling thing is they were for a United plane ticket. The day before that charge a $12,465 charge was declined. I called the bank and they closed the card and I’m not responsible for the $356.98 but won’t it be fairly easy to determine who stole my CC info since they bought a plane ticket? The service rep said the card info was used in an Apple digital wallet too. Isn’t that also able to be traced? Is this the dumbest thief ever or am I missing something here? Please excuse my naiveté, I’m not a thief and I don’t think much about how to steal from others.

Yea..im at the bank once a month for crap like this. I get a text now askin me yes or no on a purchase. When its no i gotta get a new debt card. I only have a 2000.00 limit on my cc for a reason and pay to keep a balance close to that. When i need to use it I pay it down just enough to complete the sale leaving little head room for theft.

There's nothing that can't be faked on an apple ID and there's nothing that can't be faked when purchasing a plane ticket. They are just going to charge it back and issue you a new card. All you need to buy a plane ticket is a fake name, address, phone number and email. Then you pay with a stolen credit card.

TSA doesn't even look at your boarding pass. They don't care about that ticket at all. TSA makes sure you have valid ID and puts you through detectors and bag scan so you can get on the other side of "the wall". When you board the plane, you scan your boarding pass and they don't even look at your ID.

No idea but I read the credit card companies don't make a big deal about it because there making too much money overall and don't want to tarnish the system.

I am surprised they didn't call. Mine has been stolen several times and they always call.

Do you fall for those phishing scams all the time? Or maybe your neighbor has your WiFi hacked?

I’ve got 5 credit cards I all use regularly and 2 debit cards I seldomly use. Never once had a card number stolen or someone else charging something on it.

Neither the bank, nor the thieves care enough to do anything more. It's a hit-and-run crime, not unlike retail theft.

Banks and stores will moan about $XXX of losses, but carry on, write it off, and pass the increased cost to all consumers.

The U.S. card issuers finally undertook the huge effort to adopt EMV (the chipped cards) in 2015 (more than 20 years after it was first appeared in other parts of the world), but held back on adopting the highest type of card security -- chip-and-PIN -- for fears that it would cause too much friction with users, and cause them to use other payment methods.

So they maintained the level at chip-and-signature, and then later even eliminated the latter requirement for low dollar transactions, or altogether.

The status quo works out quite well, and nobody bats an eye.

As a consumer, be grateful that credit cards are strongly regulated with protections in your favor. Something debit cards almost entirely lacked when they first appeared, which was part of the reason why they were pushed so hard by the banks. It's better now, but for those who have access to credit, there is still little compelling reason to use them. Why risk your money when you can risk theirs?

I always check my accounts a few times a day and in the past I have seen stuff in pending that were not mine and called them in ASAP... I was told that when they are in pending they are easy ton remove from your account..I never use a debit card in a store or online....

Chip cards aren’t just for security measures they function similar to a SIM card. They know what you buy where you buy how frequently etc. credit institutions use this data to profile us and add it along to our digital cyber footprint that’s forever growing.

Each transaction is generated uniquely and recorded and as with most data it gets sold off

A weird incident for me and a lessons learned. Have an internet bank with my life savings in it. 4 accounts linked—my savings and checking, my son’s UGMA checking and savings.

I see an overdraft with a jewelry purchase in a DE mall, using my debit card.

1. I never activated my debit card don’t use it
2. I never lost possession of it

The bank said they would investigate. No assurance whatsoever that the charges would be reversed.

I learned that by law the bank doesn’t have to reverse the charges for fraudulent activity on a debit card. On a credit card, max liability for cardholder is $50.

Eventually I was notified by mail the charges were reversed.

Now, why in the world does anyone have a debit card. Even more curious, why would they use one? I think my dad told me why, because they are carrying interest on a credit card and don’t want to add to it.

Anyway I concluded the bank was hacked. Because as mentioned, my debit card was in my possession and never activated. Kinda reminds all of us we do need to check for unauthorized activity. I send most day to day through our Citi Double to get the 2% and don’t always check the charges 😡

Sometimes I wonder about demographics. Where do you live?

When I got charges I didn’t make on my credit cards, I was in these places.

1. Miami FL
2. Camden NJ
3. Fort Lee, NJ

All urban metro areas

One being a credit union, I had to return a notarized affidavit as it was 5 figures.

The other charges were 4 figures. It does in fact irritate me to know, the people who made the charges got away with it.

They happened before the days where one can pay a restaurant check via QR code, or is handed a terminal to pay. Remember the days when the wait staff left with the Cc and came back 10 minutes later?

I recently applied to rent an apartment for my kid. You had to use a debit card to make the initial payment that held the unit - all done online. They did not take a credit card at all. Had to borrow kids debit card as I do not have one. I do have a "teller" card, which doesn't have the visa like capability. They keep trying to give me a debit card, and I keep saying no.

I have seen people turned around several times by TSA for having a boarding pass that doesn’t match their ID, usually a simple spelling mistake, but I’ve watched people get turned around.

They denied the +$3,000 charge the day before but did not notify me they did so and then allowed more charges the next day and the next week.

Can you set your card up for text notice by dollar. I have mine sent to text me for any charge $200+ - but you can set it to any dollar amount you want - like every charge if you wanted. Of course that would not have helped with the $3000 because it didn't clear, but you might have got the others.

How much were the other charges - small or large transactions?

I think security has gotten much better. I stopped using my card anywhere that doesn't have the chip scanner also.

I never use a debit card and this is the one CC I don’t use regularly that I didn’t have “Locked”. The new one will now be locked.

I’m just going to lock it. It’s the one I didn’t for whatever reason have locked.
