Uhhhh........no.

Of course I know the news just like rest of you clowns.

READ what I asked and think about it and get back with us. Look at Turk's answer for a clue.

My wife used her debit card at Target just last week. We each have our own separate checking and savings accounts and a joint checking account. All of our accounts are at the same bank. I had her move her checking balance to our joint checking account. We have a debit card that we never use for our joint account. We will get her a new debit card for her personal account asap and she can use the joint account until the new card arrives. We will also close her personal checking account and open another one with a different account number.

What fun this will be, having to take time off work to visit the bank and sort this all out. Mrs. Jimmy is beyond livid about this. There are no adequate words to describe my absolute hatred for online dirtbag crooks and [censored] thieves....

I used a credit card at a Schnuck's store (St. Louis based supermarket chain) about a year ago and got hit as well.

They had 2.4 million card numbers compromised.

Wife used our common card at Target last Friday; the next day (Saturday) she had a fraud alert email at breakfast. It included an 800 number that was NOT on the back of our cards, so I called the card number instead. Turns out there were all sorts of shenanigans going on, like $280 at a UK liquor store.

The bank tossed the old number, had us cut up our cards, and got new cards in the mail.

Now 6 days later this news breaks and connects the dots.

I went by our bank this afternoon and had our debit cards cancelled and new ones issued. We shopped at Target during that time period.

We don't use credit cards for local shopping, but we do use the debit card.

We learned an important lesson with this situation. My wife likes to use her debit card at Target because she pays the bills and doesn't like big cc bills. The debit card pulls from a checking account that has about $30k in it. So, instead of a thief posting charges on a credit card that can be challenged, they drain our primary operating account of potentially much more than they can get away with with a cc. I closed the debit card down yesterday, thankfully before any damage was done.

Well, someone got my Credit Card info from Target and used it to charge $649.79 at walmart.com.

Called my CC company and they disabled it & will send me a new one. Of course do not have to pay the fradulent charge.

Now I gotta cancel & enter new card info on several places.

Please... everyone... check your statements.

I got nailed last month. It was my debit card that got hacked so it was even worse than a regular CC as it was coming out of my checkbook.

Luckily for me the person using it was in TX and I live in NH. They made 2 charges in a short time span at the same store that was very close to the time I had used it up here. That set off the alarms at my bank. They called to see what was going on and when it became clear the card was stolen they shut it down and stopped any further fraud.

I had to go to the bank the next day and fill out paperwork then wait 7-10 days for the money to be put back. I got lucky and had it back in just 4 days. It actually took longer to get the new debit card then it did to get the fraud charges refunded. I was very pleased with my bank and how they handled it all.

I was told at my bank that some other folks had been hit too and that the #'s had been stolen through Target. I think it may have been a coincidence for me because I have never shopped at Target - ever. There is only one Target even close to me and it is a pit from what I see from the road. Never had the desire to even go in the parking lot never mind the store itself.

The fraud charges on my debit card were made at a Target in TX so I wonder if the bank assumed I was part of this whole Target scam?. I had been on vacation in September down in VA and went to a big theme park while there. I wonder if someone used one of those scanner things to get my card info and as said it was just a coincidence that Target was the store the fraud was committed at? I know I have got one of those protective wallets that block that from happening just in case now.

I wish when they catch people who do this they would put them away for life. Rotten SOB's.

That is why I no longer use my debit card for, well, anything. One crook and my cash is gone. At least on a credit card I can fight charges, just pay the min charge, whatever--there is a buffer, and my cash is safe.

I've thought about getting multiple credit cards, and using each one for a specific purpose, that way if someone stole my info it would show up faster--IOW, if booze showed up on my "gas" card then I'd know right away. Too many cards tho, and I'd be apt to misuse them myself (use the wrong card at the grocery store, that sort of thing, defeating the purpose in the first place).

Lately it seems I've been getting a new card every year. If you ask me, CC companies ought to just start issuing new ones every 6 (or even 3!) months. Or give the option--like, sign up for a new card every 3 months.

Whenever I read about these scams I'm also tempted to go back to paying cash. I'd probably buy less stuff too, if I could directly see that green stuff leaving my fingers. Nuisance to carry that much money though.

Being able to charge back if the vendor screwed you over is nice, though. Plus the kickbacks.

Funny thing, my mag stripe was about "swiped out" and now I have this new card. Sweet!

Same here + could not read the CVV code on the back, I had it memorized.

Got $210 in cash back from using the card this year, so it's good using this type.

I am not liable for this scam charge, btw... Whew.

My wife and I shop at Target regularly. I called BoA this morning and requested new debit cards because I'd rather be safe even though I was told that my cards were no compromised. I did not get a new credit card because again I was told it wasn't compromised and the extra level of protection on the credit side. I didn't want to risk my cash.

The new card fees were waived because of what happened.

I am pretty much at this point. In the near future my wife and I will no longer use debit cards just because of the extra security for debit cards.

One really nice thing BoA has is their ShopSafe program where you create credit card numbers linked to your account, but those numbers can be limited. Unfortunately it's for online only so you can use it over the phone, but if you want to buy $35 worth of stuff from an online retailer, you set the limit to that and even if someone steals the number it is no good.

Oh this is just great as the wife used our CC at a local Target a few weeks ago. We try to use it once a year just to keep it active.
Maybe I should should make a call today to see if any more activity shows up.

This post gave me a random thought. Would it be a good idea to remove the CVV code from the backs of your cards, and write it down somewhere else, to make fraud more difficult... at least they can't use it on the internet?

It would be ok unless it had to be verified in person. A follow-up: mine can "barely" be made out... if you really tried hard... but could easily be confused for other numbers, like a "3" for an "8".

Seems they were able to get that number off the magstripe as well. I've been places (Lowes) that need that number, BTW. In light of it being in the magnetic stuff it might be to keep their clerks honest.

A way to add a layer of trouble for n'er do wells is that "verified by Visa" thing where you need a password at a separate website after buying something.

Asking for billing zip code in brick & mortar places is also useful, methinks.

About the asking for a billing zip code is interesting. I remember hearing something a few months back about how dishonest cashiers are collecting those to steal credit card info as well.

No matter what is done, the root problem is always going to be there... dishonesty.

Don't pay as debit -- pay as credit. Much safer and you have better protection from the card issuer (Visa/MC/Discover/Amex).
