stock market

My 401(k) has made 56% over the last year, so I'm not complaining ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Its a great feeling, even though always remember, you haven't made 56%, you have a 56% unrealized gain until you sell it. I only say that because I got used to reminding myself as well. I am, have been doing quite well, just remember, its not real money or "realized" gain until you sell it.

I have doubts.
Italy is hitting another surge. I doubt the US is far behind, and all the hospitals have trimmed staff, legislators have denigrated healthcare workers, and people are jumping ship left and right. It's going to get spicy if we have surge 2.0
I agreed with some of your past posts but not this one in your reply to the health industry employee.
The good news for me is, if many others feel like you do (and I think the press will scare them so) then I am hopeful I maybe right and the stock market will continue to climb.
"The Surge" in other parts of the world, non issue here. People are plain worn out, anyone afraid of getting sick can get vaccinated, I mean, how much more simple can that be? Afraid of being sick? get a shot, done. Slowly over the coming weeks that will sink into peoples head and get the remainder onboard to start spending, spending, spending, like Americans do soooooo well!

There will be no surge in the USA, its done, over with but I am glad others dont think so, it means, more room for the market to go up and up and up *LOL*
25% of the country has had at least one shot, another 25% doesnt want a shot, as of Wed March 31st anyone over the age of 16 can get a vaccine in my state. Its stupid simple, for the last month you can schedule an appt for a vaccine, almost at will, chose the time and date and get it in as soon as 24 hours or whenever convenient for you over a 5 day period. I think this will sink in and the market take off, money burns holes in Americans pockets, I dont expect that to change and the spending will take off. Actually its doing quite well.
(please no more virus talk, the thread will get closed)
But the reasoning is simple for my past posts, I think spending will explode by summer and next holiday season? Wow!
That doesnt mean the market will follow, keep in mind, markets look forward but a strong case at least (in my mind) for now until the early fall.

I'd be happy for you to prove me wrong.

I look at the properties I own on Zillow etc and the stocks and mutual funds I own and say they have gone up. How much have they gone up? We will see when I actually decide to sell them.

They have an impact on the market, no doubt.

But the discussion has been a debate on those topics and not their influence on the market, and while doing so, has skated on the edge of political and CV-19 discussions.

Yeah, lots of that is kind of off topic.

On Topic: When oil turned negative I bought 3X leveraged oil ETF to take advantage of the climbing prices in the future.

Here in FL, 87 octane is approaching $3 a gallon.

Don't forget you ownly own 70% of that 401(k) balances.....taxes are coming.

alarmguy,

Even places like Foot Locker are seeing a BIG increase in sales due to all the stimulus checks....

I‘m not surprised TJ Max is packed.

*** Hopefully *** things return to a somewhat normal in the near future.

12 hours later...

Ok, so back to the big bad pandemic. Like I said, its over, never really started for my wife and I, it was a virus that wasnt too good for older sick people. We lived our lives as we always did right through 2020 into 2021, other then being careful, didnt change a thing.

Isn’t that true of your salary/wage too?

if one is worried they should start funding a Roth. Seems like the stand advice is to fund 401k until full company match, then max out Roth, then go back to funding 401k.

Yeah, I try to remove emotion from the investing equation but its hard to do when I saw what I saw yesterday. Free flowing money at the registers, now is the market already banking on the increase in retail sales from the newest round?(most likely)
But what about the other unknown which may also move the market higher, the willingness of the consumer to take on new debt. This could really propel us into a booming economy that is already pretty good. I suspect this willingness will prove to be true. We will see!

Airlines are seeing more flights being booked for this summer and same for hotels.

Lots of people with cabin fever wanting to get out.

Which has been reflected in recent share prices.

Check out UAL stock performance over the last 12 months.

It's only when you take it out. When you're retired, you might only be in the 12-22% bracket.

.
Wish that was the same for Canadian airlines.
Even though they bought up 7x what they needed for vaccine, the key point is delivery and they're lagging way behind the US. I think once they get enough, they will start to open up also so you might be able to buy low at this point.

Hasn't the whole market priced in a recovery ?
The US market, maybe not the rest of the world as we lead the world in total doses administered.
