We did in the 80's and 90's and even early 2000's. The HEMI's before VCT was added didn't have lifter problems. I'm rather confident that it's a materials and QC issue due to offshoring.
What I've been doing to the Cummins 6.7 engines I work on is dump the oil when hot, leave the filter on, filler up till it's on the dipstick with synthetic PAO/ester hydraulic fluid. After it's cooled off run till the oil filter is warm to the touch, leave it over night if possible, over the weekend is even better. Run against till slightly warm and dump it. Then refill with the world best 15w-40 oil, saftykleen.
