So a family member will be having surgery soon up in the Rochester area and I need a room for 2 or 3 nights. Dont want anything high end since I will probably only be in the room for sleeping anyways. I need your reviews on the places I'm considering:

1. Microtel Inn and Suites - $53/Night
2. Days Inn - $61/Night
3. Econo Lodge - $60/Night
4. Extended Stay America - $45/night
5. Super 8 - 49/night

Thanks guys!

If one of those is a place that has superior housekeeping .. thats where I'd stay.

who knows what they were doing on those unwashed sheets yesterday??? ewww.

Hotels/motels are one thing I find it is worth spending a little extra $$$. I put my uppity hat on when it comes to motels. I generally will only stay at a Holiday Inn (Or H.I. Express). They are generally very clean and they offer a darn good full breakfast.

I'd try to find a comfort Inn/Clarion Inn, those are usually very nice at good prices. Also look into if they have a Marriott. Of the ones you listed, Days Inn.

Thanks Nick, they do have a Clarion so I'll look into that. Marriots cheapest rate is $139 per night, more than I want to pay right now.

First thing I'd do is check the bed bug registry to see if any of the hotels under consideration have reports of bed bug infestations. You can Google "bed bug registry" to find the site.

Live a little - HOTWIRE baby!!! I never stay at less than a three star, and do watch the reviews. Will not consider any hotel with less than 80% recommended... I don't travel that much, but Hotwire can save you a bundle... Three stars are Holiday Inn's, Holiday Inn Express, Doubletree, etc. I stayed at Minneapolis last June for $400 out the door (inc taxes etc) for 7 days at a Sheraton. My family had a great time!

+1

Im more afraid of roaches myself. Who is to say that you wont go into the budget room that is quaint, turn on the light, and if you are like me the first thing you do is stare down the corners and walls to see if anything is moving.. forgot all about bed bugs with the roaches around.

I have had super clean $38 a night rooms at Motel Six and Super 8. The largest difference tends to be the shower. If all you need is a bed and a TV and maybe a heater, the cheapest one will do and if it aint got roaches (you wont know until you go in and sort of eyeing the place up and reading reviews).. score!

I always *crings* and brace myself when 1. Turning on the lights 2. Opening up the fridge/going by heater 3. entering the bed 4. going in the bathroom as you DONT know where those little roaches may be and the hotel aint gonna tell you if they are... it is the one thing that may make me avoid the cheapest motel if it is a $10 range or so.

Why pay twice as much at Hampton Inn and Suites for the same thing? or the other more upscale motels? You can pay $109 a night, depending, sometimes more...

or ~$35 a night..

Its all about the presence or lack of roaches which get commented on if there are/were bed bugs as well, IMHO. Google is the answer.

If a hotel had roaches and a guest sw one, it IS going to be in the review and you need to find another motel because they are probably in your room too there.. now OTOT if NONE of the reviews say roaches and the compaint is with a serviceperson, thats the hotel to go to if you had to choose. Assuming its not priced like the Burj 7-star resort in Dubai, as some hotels are ($179 a night $239 a night, up.)

Priceline or Hotwire will let you pay the same as the basic ones and get something superior.

Use hotire if free breakfast is important to you as it will indicate that.

You can use websites called biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com to see likely hotels you will end up with.

Or you could book it for your first night only and then extend the stay once you get there. Book a different hotel if you didn't like it (Use higher stars on priceline or another hotel on hotwire).

Aim for a Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, or Residence Inn and your breakfast will be included. Mon to Thurs at a Residence Inn and Embassy Suites gets you food and sometimes free beer in the evenings during a social hour.

And use tripadvisor to check how good the hotel is before you book.

+1 on the above. We have used Priceline on our last two trips. I would go 4 star in that area and book for one night. If you like the hotel you end up with, Priceline it for the rest of the trip.

There's so many price comparison sites....I'd try em all. Priceline, Expedia, I think even Cheaptickets does comparison shopping for hotel/motels now even....

But yea, definitely check the reviews....

Honestly, roaches don't bother me....when I'm at a motel I'm there on business and likely not "eating" in the room

Now yes, if I were intending on staying/living in the room for say more than 4 days....and would be preparing food, drinks, etc....during my stay, definitely would be worrying about roaches scurring across my counter top that I'm about to munch down my meal at.....hehehe.

When we took our trips this year we generally used Hotels.com and looked at the ratings on there to help with the decision. From what I understand stayin at the HI or Express doesn't guarrante that it is any cleaner that some of the others. Days Inn has been pretty hit or miss. Super 8 has generally been decent. Motel 6 we don't stay at anymore unless it is a last place available. We've had good luck with Comfort Inn also.

I use the booking sites (hotels.com is pretty good) to get a feel for reviews and the best published internet rate. Then I call the hotel I want directly and ask what their best "Manager Special" or AAA rate is- about half the time it's better than the internet rate. If it's not, I say thank you and hang up, then book online.

That bedbug registry is new to me, but I'll definitely be using it!

I can appreciate that but you are from Florida and perhaps a Florida native Floridian? So i can see why the Palmetto doesnt bug you too much.

Me i cant stand those scary-looking things because you see one you see more.. and ive dealt with mice but the whole thing is that both "infest" and well they arent "just ok" they can ruin the value of your home but if a roach moves in, i move out.

It speaks to the cleanliness of the hotel. Some peopel like me just dont like roaches. They might not crawl ON you but boooy.. ive had them crawl within 6 inches of my face as ive laid down. BIG one, too. And then saw it run into the wall and disappear. No.

If it was a free room i can understand "dealing" but they crawl around you when you sleep.. i cant imagine paying for that. Some hotels spray and take out garbage but some just have a regular old roach hive in the wall behind your room and they will come out of the vent and say Hello while you open your box of pizza in the room.

I would definitely stay at Extended Stay..Never had a issue with any of them..45 bucks is dirt cheap for Extended Stay..I payed 100 bucks a night in New Jersey last year.

I tend to stay at Hampton Inns as my "go to" chain. Haven't ever really had a bad one - overpriced, yes, but no terrible issues with the rooms. Otherwise, Holiday Inn Express or Comfort Inns have usually been fine.

That being said, I use Tripadvisor as a guide as well. Of the ones you mentioned, it looked like the Microtel and Super 8 were the higher ranked ones of the bunch.
