Staying in a hotel soon - NEED ADVICE!!!

My preference is the Hilton Chain Hotels (Hampton Inn, etc).
One thing you can try is to see if there is a big company close by and call the desk and ask for the "XXXXXX company rate". Usually they will have set up a special rate for visitors at the close by Hamptons and Holiday Inns. It is worth a shot and the rooms are much nicer than the low-end hotels.

Check reviews at hotels.com on the hotels in the area. You can sort the hotels by price. I always look for highest rating and lowest price.

I'm a cheapskate and will usually try to get the cheapest place I can find online. If the reviews are awful, I'll pick someplace else.

If I'm staying for more than one night, sometimes I'll book just my first night online and once I'm in town, I'll keep my eyes open for a place that might be cheaper for the next night; its much more reliable when I can check them out in person. In some towns, many clean and inexpensive places are available that cannot be found online.

I'll admit I've stayed in some real dumps. One independant place in Alliance, OH was probably the worst. More recently, and also in Ohio (Fostoria), was a place that completely lost my hotels.com reservation and when I arrived, they had no rooms. It was a holiday weekend so rooms in town were likely scarce and after some moaning on my part they put me into a room that was probably left as their "last resort emergency use only" room. It was full of extra bedframes stacked along the wall, and the complimentary soaps in the bathroom looked like they'd been sitting there since the Carter administration.

For me I have no problem with staying at a Super 8 or Comfort Inn. I've had good luck with them and I'd rather spend my money on places to see and go than on a place to lay my head. As long as the bed is comfortable and the rooms appear to be clean I'm OK with it. Continental Breakfasts are good also since we rarely eat a regular meal for breakfast.

Like others have said, try to get a nice one on Priceline first (use the name your price option). I had a great stay at a DoubleTree that only costed a little more than a lower tier chain.

But out of all of those you listed, I'd either go with Days Inn or Super 8.

I'd pick Extended Stay, they are usually adequate and reasonably clean and organized. No fancy stuff like 24 hour guest services or stuff like that.

Usually you get Extended Stay types of hotel if you try hotwire 2.5 stars.

1. Microtel Inn and Suites - $53/Night
2. Days Inn - $61/Night
3. Econo Lodge - $60/Night
4. Extended Stay America - $45/night
5. Super 8 - 49/night

Thanks guys!

Go to this site...

http://www.tripadvisor.com/

...and enter the various Hotels you are considering and then read the customer reviews. I have found the reviews there to be very accurate when I have used it to research hotels.

I refuse to pay a lot just to sleep and shower in a room. However, I want to sleep/shower in a clean room with no critters or left over bodily fluids if you get the point. I always stay at the economy type Hotels( Super 8, Motel 6, EconoLodge, etc... ). I use TripAdvisor to check them out before booking. Never been disappointed. Sometimes you have to recognize a problem customer who is posting a bad review to get even for something though.

Also, a tip for you is to call the Hotel directly( or use the company/corporate web site )for the best deal on rates. I have NEVER got a better rate trying to use one of these sites that claim they get you such great deals. I have always got the best deal, and by a wide margin to boot, just booking directly through the Hotel/Hotel company.

If worst comes to worst and you get bed bugs, at least leave your luggage in your freezing car. (Run the laundry in in a hefty bag and immediately wash/dry it.)

Good luck with your relative's surgery. You can catch/ spread all sorts of wierd stuff in a hospital too. Watch the drs and nurses for hand washing when they enter the room.

If you don't wish to be in a pet-friendly hotel, then stay away from Hotwire.

They don't think this is an important fact to note in their property descriptions, even as you go up the star scale. I booked into what I thought would be a very nice hotel that I ended up sharing with animals.

I would not set foot in an Econo Lodge. I have not stayed in one in the Rochester area, but I did stay in one in PA and it was horrible. Foul smelling and highly questionable housekeeping.

Econo Lodge doesn't seem much different from Budget Inn. The Sam's Mart near where I work actually posted a sign banning Budget Inn "residents" from the store due to theft. The Budget Inn is a blatantly obvious brothel with "advertising" going on in the parking lot and road.

Hampton Inns are pricy. But the Hampton Inn in Mt Airy NC is bar none the best hotel I have ever been. It is a family run outfit and just super. Even the breakfast is great.

Days Inn.
