The SS system can be turned off on my Mini (BMW engine) with a dashboard switch, and it actually remembers your choice when you start the car later. My wife turns it off, and I don't mind it that much and usually leave it on, since I've kind of learned its tendencies and can control it with my driving habits to an extent (car is a stick shift).
The wear aspect has crossed my mind, so I may decide to change my strategy once the warranty period ends. FF oil is a thin 0w-20 synthetic, by the way.
