-BMW: BMW Group Fuel System Cleaner Plus

recommended if top tier gas is unvailable

NOT AN ADDITIVE ACCORDING TO GM ALTHOUGH MANY USE IT AS ONE. GM ENGINE OIL SUPPLEMENT (EOS) MOST CURRENT PN IS 88862586 AND SELLS FOR 17.45 USD

ALRIGHT! LIST ALSO ALL GASOLINE OR ENGINE OIL ADDITIVES, SUPPLEMENTS, POTIONS, AND CONCOCTIONS AS LONG AS THEIR USE IS APPROVED OR ENDORSED BY THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER!

I wasn't aware of the yelling situation until yesterday and really didn't think of it as offensive. However, i will attempt to limit my use of all caps.

Lubegard transmission supplements used to be approved by two or three major automakers. I don't know if this is still true or not. One was a French car manufacturer and I can't remember what the other two were. I think one was Saab and the other may have been Audi.

Many moons ago, just before the bicentennial, I spent some time at a Ford Dealership. Everything from Glass Cleaner, Bug and Tar Removers, brake fluid, carb and choke cleaners we all badged as Ford. The point that I am trying to make is that even if an Auto Manufacturer were to accept an aftermarket product, it was badged as Ford in my experience. So who knows.

Secondly, the majority of lube specs are done independently of the car company. I think we have a site sponsor here, that does exactly that. So in essence the lube part of the auto industry is third party derived. On the other side of the coin, this would be just like asking if any of the major oil companies recommend any after market products. And of coarse the answer would have to be no. That would imply that their products aren't perfect. That would also infer that from a dollars and cents perspective, they make the most dollars without newer or more expensive technologies. It's kind of like governmental bureaucracy. Alot of innovation comes from the small guys, however.

I guess that this is why we have an additive section here at BITOG. The small guys that don't have the chips to play can compete and show their inventions here on a closer to equal playing field.

What the OEM wants to limit is the variables from consumer tinkering. As you're saying, they use many of the same additives ..or like products, in their service procedures when encountering issues. GM's (I forget the real name) top engine cleaner (the one that you poured 1/2 down the carb ..let the engine sit for 20 minutes ..then poured the rest down the carb while revving the engine ) ..was used for decades for those who knew of its benefits. While not an additive, per se~, but it's one example of "Do what I say, not as I necessarily do" type situation.

Gary, You got the name right,it is Top End Engine Cleaner. Stuff worked great, came in a spray can also. I would pull the plugs and pour into the combustion camber, crank it over put the plugs back in and let it set over night it would decarbon the ring packs and what a cloud of smoke. GM tech told me to do this once a year!

agreed on the TEC-worked wonders for the 307-4V in my old Cutlass. Car ran exclusively on Castrol 10-40 and Castrol 20-50---no wonder it worked so well

When I worked at Ford, I asked the chemists what criteria they use to approve fuel system cleaners (and which is best). They told me that they don't test for cleaning effectiveness, they just make sure that it doesn't harm the fuel system.

So, take the manufacturer's stamp of approval for what it's worth.
