ST3980 Cut Open - When will it end?

But it brings up the other potantial problem with a plastic center tube. If it should break maybe due to molding defect you are more likely to get collapse of the element blocking the filter exit than with a metal tube. Like that engine that was oil starved due to a collapsd ecore.

Yeah I use to use them, now I'd rather use a Fram orange can than this.
Got a bunch of Purolators so I am set for awhile

This Ecore problem reminds me of other issues we have discussed on BITOG. For example, I bet GM engineers were totally convinced that Dexcool was a great coolant that would last for long intervals and provide superior protection. And they probably were right if all engines were maintained perfectly and never had unexpected failures of other components. However, when LIM and UIM gaskets failed and air leaked into systems other ways, suddenly you were facing sludged cooling systems and blown engines. Same with Champ's Ecores. Probably a great design, on paper, but in the real world stuff happens and Ecores don't have the safety margin to handle the stuff.

Yeah I thought of that Dexcool to ecore analogy as well. The nylon IMG probably sounded like a good idea too. Ecores are probably fine except when they are executed poorly. They need lots of pleats. I think if they had lots of pleats and tighter spacing like the cartridge ecores, they would never have any issues and would be fine.

I have wondered about Dex Cool. Mixing types creates problems? Does every Iffy Lube have a good selection and the highly trained technicians use the right one to top up every time?

In the 5 years I ran the factory fill in my Cavalier, nobody touched the tank cap. After 5 years, it was down a little, but not too much to leave well enough alone. I then anally flushed it and put Prestone Low Tox in it.

Timing belts usually are fine if changed when recommended.

Lesson #1 ... don't go to any "Iffy Lube" place. If ya want it done right, do it yourself (that's my MO).

Some years ago somebody here was talking about looking in other people's master cylinders. If I caught somebody messing around under the hood of my car, I might slam the hood shut on their arms.

Well I have no problems with Dex Cool and suggested problems may be due to failure to follow directions.

I just prefer the safety of PG base. Anytime you change from one formulation to another, you want to be anal about getting rid of the old.

Back on topic.

I peeled off the "top" cap and pulled the cage.

The ends show (kind of) that there was no breakage.

Here's a profile view.

Here's my analysis of the molding process (I'm NOT an injection molding expert). There wasn't enough material shot into the mold.

The mold appears to be a two piece with a core. The last part of the mold to fill is the area in question.

I'm wondering if this cage wasn't a setup piece that got mixed in with the "good" parts. It's not unheard of in molding houses. QC (if any) missed this one.

That's it. I don't have anymore ST's installed in any of my vehicles. There might be an AC-Delco PF52 installed on my Dad's Safari (dunno if it's an E-Core or not). I have one ST left in the cabinet and that's where it will stay until I decide to pitch it.

So on the basis of one minor defect that didn't appear to cause a problem, you are going to avoid the product? If you cut every filter open and never use a brand you find a problem with again, you may run short of filters before long.

The possibility that you have two small pieces of plastic floating around inside the engine and or clogging an oil galley are not non existent.

For sheer piece of mind I would avoid anything made by Chump labs

Not anyother brand will sent foreign material into your engine like a escrap will!, yes they should be avoided!

Maybe flaws like that in the center cage is what caused the one documented instance of the Ecore that collapsed and ruin an engine.

That's what I've wondered too. I can guarantee you no filter manufacture will reinburse you for a ruined engine even if it was the filter's fault. They will wiggle out of it.

Honestly, with all the slaggin Fram OCOD takes for it's shoddy construction, these things are built even worse.
But they are priced right for what they are, which is where Fram also takes a beating.
There are soooo many other filters I would buy before one of these.

You mean the crate engine the owner destroyed by blocking off the bypass? That is the best you have to support your anti Champ jihad?
